    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Real experience shared by the engineers and graduates in the BP operation was really insightful. We get the chance to know their roles in the operation. For me, I am really amazed by the teamwork demonstrated across all the companies in tackling the engineering challenges. Another insight that I must share was the job rotation scheme in the BP which allowed the staffs to expose and learn different skill sets, at the same time offering full flexibility to the staffs to develop themselves by taking on new challenges. A lot of self-development opportunities in BP!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • The BP staffs were very down-to-earth to join us and share their experiences with us during lunch time and the site visit. They encouraged us to ask, share and give our opinions. They were ready to share their experiences at all times.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • There were two forms of guidance and support, mainly Q&A session and the another one was all participants were given booklets on the tips and advices how to apply for jobs in BP.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I must say the career advices and interview workshop session really boosted my confidence in applying for jobs especially big company like BP. Being an international Î÷¹ÏÊÓƵ, it was really difficult for me to secure any internship in the UK therefore I was not exposed to any real experience in the job application processes such as telephone interview and technical assessment tests. Through BP Discovery Days, the recruiter was very kind enough to share with us the tips what should we expect in each stage and the tips to be a successful applicant. I definitely felt more confident!

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • One of the best Discovery Days I ever had! The structure is as follows: 1. Geographical and cultural aspects of the operation area 2. Understanding on the whole operation at the chemical plant 3. Sharings by the head engineers and graduates 4. Site visit (research laboratory and manufacturing plant) 5. Games on energy challenge 6. Career advices and interview workshop The structure was very well thought which allowed participants to discover more about the company, the engineers and even ourselves to figure out what we really like to pursue in the oil and gas industry.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was very encouraging. I must give credits to all the BP staffs. They are extremely passionate for what they do and like to contribute to the company, at the same time maintained company values with full integrity.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Even though I was there just for the Discovery Days, I felt BP had invested so much in the graduates such as job rotation scheme, technical workshops, line manager to communicate with in addition to providing safe and encouraging environment for self-development.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • As the name of the event implied Discovery Days, it really fulfilled what it needs to achieve. I really knew more about the company's operation as well graduates' life. When they were first offered jobs, they were assigned to design pilot plants and challenging tasks. The graduates are expected to be independent and form a team to address the challenge. BP will provide world-class infrastructures and line managers for them to talk to if had any difficulties. After these 18 months of job rotation scheme, the graduates can choose what kind of area would they like to specialise in. At any time, the staffs have complete freedom to pursue anything that can develop themselves, at the same time contribute to the company.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Absolutely. As mentioned, the BP staffs always relate their sharing and work practices to the company values: safety, respect, excellence, courage and one team. For example, during the Discovery Day, they took safety precautions seriously even walking on the staircases, we were given instructions to hold the handrail at all times.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • At first, I always skeptical about oil and gas industry for being "dirty". Actually, there were so many on-going research and development invested heavily by the BP to tackle to the chemical production in a more efficient and green way. Therefore, BP required a lot of talents from different engineering disciplines. The Discovery Day event really got me interested to work with BP in the downstream operation.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • We had lunch and time to engage conversation with the Head of Operation and Research as well as graduates.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Some candidate asked about the opportunities to work abroad. The staffs answered well and gave a few examples the projects they had worked abroad, however did not reveal more information. Probably interviewed graduates will be exposed more regarding these opportunities in another event and not during Discovery Days.
