About You
Brilliant experience: met some great people and learnt a lot about the oil & gas industry, as well as about the company itself. The BP representatives were very friendly and helpful.
Even in the awkward early stages of meeting new people, the BP employees were very kind and engaging: everyone was able to mingle without feeling left out.
The conference was very intensive but there were always at least two people from the company on hand to offer guidance on the simulation. They didn't "spoon feed" us either: we were merely given hints and tips so that we could actually make the decisions ourselves. Making mistakes wasn't shameful, in fact they said that people learn more from making mistakes.
I felt that my communication skills and public speaking skills were strengthened during this conference. Having been faced with a new group of faces and a very alien simulation, I had to find the confidence to approach the issues head-on: I didn't think I would be able to do it, but it turned out to be a great experience.
The Company
There was a timetable that was stuck to very well so I always knew where I should be and what I was doing. The two and a half days were absolutely packed (early morning until late at night!).
I really enjoyed the experience: I would definitely consider working for BP.
It was a short insight event so I don't feel as though I had one-to-one training, but they were great at encouraging team work.
I learnt that there's much more to the oil & gas industry than meets the eye: what we see in the petrol stations is a mere percentage of the work BP does. I also learnt about the upstream industry in great detail - my degree and skill set would put me in the downstream sector so it was very interesting to find out about the upstream business.
All the representatives were very friendly and the graduates who had volunteered to speak to us also reinforced this perception of the workplace.
BP seems to be a very friendly and welcoming company: I can definitely see myself working for them in the future.
Everything Else
All travel expenses were covered, and they set us up in a nice hotel for the conference too (food and accommodation all included).
There were graduates as well as people from the recruitment teams, and a few industry reps as well.
As with all new experiences the first few moments are daunting but our hosts were very sociable and by the first evening I had made a good few friends and was able to have a general conversation with the BP people too.
The graduates tend to socialise a lot (meals out, clubs, ski trips) and there are on-site facilities for sports and leisure.
It is a great opportunity to learn more about the company and to meet the people who work there to get a feel for the atmosphere.
