The Role
I've had an incredible Summer working at BP. Every aspect of the internship ahs been outstanding, from the people I've worked with, the workscope itself to the working conditions and benefits of working for BP. This has literally been my dream job.
11 weeks is a short amount of time to get to know a group of people, but everyone you come into contact with here is accomodating, friendly and helpful, giving up their own time at the drop of a hat to assist you in any way you need.
Of course, this sort of internship is designed to be challenging, to assess your ability to work and think and your ability to take on a full time position, but in saying that, the support, when needed, is always there.
I was kept busy every day of the Summer, but equally wasn't rushed off my feet.
The project I ran directly affected the outcome of a real problem and my recommendations will be implemented in the future- that's about as real as it gets.
The exact work scope was of a slightly different direction to my actual degree, but considering this internship is an introduction to the career path I'd like to take, it's been perfect for my personal development- soft skills included.
The Company
The particular office I was in was a large, open, active environment. There was always some sort of discussion going on and the general attitude was light and well humored. An exellent office environment.
This is clearly a well oiled machine, with tried and tested methods. Nothing negative to report.
In the time I was here I wasn't sent on any external training. The oppertunity did come up, but I concluded that my time in the office was more valuable. In terms of in house training, I'd say as much as a quarter of the first month I was here was spent one-on-one developing my understanding.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
The call comes through the first working day after the internship ends. This being a positive result, then all that is required of me is to go on to graduate this coming year with a 2:1 or better.
The Culture
Personally I lived at home over the summer with my family, home friends and girlfriend, but from what I've heard, the other interns that moved here for the summer had regular events set up and were always kept busy with nights out etc.
Accomodation in Aberdeen isn't the cheapest, as a result of the Oil and Gas industry, but the pay covers this. Socialising activities n the area don't break the bank however.
Aberdeen doesn't have the fanciest nice clubs, but the facilities are there and they are popular- you just need to turn up with the right attitude and the right people.
Most weeks there were activities organised through work and it's pretty easy to get involved with these.
