The Role
I was working on the Andrew Area Development which is such an interesting project and I was given the full responsibility of someone in an Electrical Engineering role, so my projects were not simply thrown together for the sake of a placement, but actually added value to the company.
My colleagues were all very quick to come and introduce themselves and make good friends. In this role you need to rely on the people in the office as they do with you so you get to know them well
We are assigned a line manager, mentor and a buddy, so there is always someone to go to for support or guidance when neccessary. I also had weekly meetings with my line manager to ensure any problems were ironed out as soon as possible.
There is a good mix of getting stuck into work and time to enjoy yourself. There's never someone looking over your shoulder to get work done, but as long as it's done they don't mind when. Hours are pretty flexible due to this.
I was given the opportunity to set up a weekly discipline meeting with all the electrical guys and this was something senior management were very interested in and gave a lot of support for.
As an operator I needed to learn how all the electrical plant works, BP provide modules called WebLearn which are hour long courses for pretty much anything, so you learn about the industry quickly.
The Company
The people in the office are all really good to work with. They have a great balance of getting work done and also having a laugh when they could. We also get free fruit twice a week and free pies so that raised spirits!
One thing that made this placement stand out to any others that I have completed was the organisation. I was never left without work and always knew what was happening. The company also treat staff very well with organised dinners and lunches over the internship.
BP always asked if there were other disciplines I would like some information about or time spent in. Also there were various site visits and lunch and learn courses to ensure we knew everything we could about the industry.

In my final week I gave a presentation to decide if I will get a graduate job, this is a half hour presentation followed by half an hour of questions and I will find out by next week if I have secured a job.
The Culture
BP employed 40 interns in the Aberdeen area which made it very similar to university atmosphere. The interns were great for regular nights out, football, squash, hill walking and pretty much everything in between.
Due to the amount of interns just hanging out or going for a kick about in the park meant there was a lot of things you could do for free.
Aberdeen is a really good night out, with various bars and clubs nights out were always a great experience!
There was a lot of days out held by BP including golf outings and football, but on top of these there is always something going on with the interns be it going out to high ropes courses, go-karting, paintballing and much more.
