The Role
It was very informative, allowing me to gain a greater insight into what an intern would involve, hence showing me more aspects of petroleum geology that I could work in.
All very friendly and interested in what I was doing/done, it makes for a pleasent working atmosphere where everyone has respect for one another and so I imagine work gets done to a better standard.
My intern took me through everything she did explaining, well, how and why. She let me have a go at some of the stuff she was doing and gave me tips and advice so that I had actual hands on experience.
I was just on a shadow and intern day so this is not applicable however the day itself was filled without being to slow or quickly rushed through. I feel that it would have been beneficial for me to have seen what other geoscience based interns where doing - more variety Looking in it would seem the intern I was shadowing was working at an acceptable level.
Just shadowing an intern - none required and none expected to be given.
Introduced me to seismographs and other basic petroleum geology theories which where useful on a field trip to the Wessex basin. The use of seismographs will also be helpfull later on in my degree.
The Company
The atmosphere was good and felt like it would be a productive working atmosphere. The open planned nature allowed people to talk, asking questions when they were not sure about something and share ideas.
It was very well organised in terms of choice of dates, timings, locational information. I felt that the intern could have been a bit more prepared on knowing things like how the card swipe gates and meal systems work for visitors. However she has prepared well for the more 'academic' side of things which is more important.
Although this was a single day visit BP have been very good in opening my eyes to what exists in their company. A shadown an intern day I have not come across anywhere else and it is a really good way to get knowledge on what you would be doing in an intern which you can't get online etc. The links between shadowing interns, working as an intern and graduate jobs are also great aspect of BP. I have a BP bursary of £1000 a year to aid my studies.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
They have been gratelly increased by the visit as i now understand more about what I would be doing.
The Culture
Again I was only there for a day so I can't really comment.
Only there for the day, from what I heard it is relativly expensive, but that is to be expected. The accomodation provided through BP is a long distance to travel every day and hence also expensive which would be a point i would strongly consider if I were to get an internship at some point with BP
Only there for the day.
Only there for the day
