The Role
I was expecting interesting engineering work but I found this very difficult to come across. Engineers in BP don't need scientific calculators, this gives an indication. I did gain a great insight into how BP manages enormous projects. That was pretty cool
The only work I had that directly affect business was rather tedious - the jobs they didn't want. However, I found myself a niche doing other interesting work I managed to invent.
I had very good meetings and guidance with feedback regarding how BP go about managing large projects. I met a very good mentor.
Generally I was bored and I was struggling to motivate myself to get things done as nobody really needed it. I had time critical work early on, this was great but it ran out pretty quickly.
I had responsibility for one project. However the project came against a non-technical barrier and I couldn't progress it further.
Very valuable, but not in terms of engineering skills.
The Company
Atmosphere was oppressive, but tolerable. There is a poster that tells you how you may walk down the stairs. "always hold hand rail" etc. Says alot.
Very good in terms of HR activities but no so good in terms of getting given good work to do.
Yes. I love BP for that. If you need a training course you can generally get what you need (as in day long activities etc).
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
If you want a comfortable job and never have to think too hard, this is perfect.
The Culture
Most interns shared accommodation in Aberdeen (there were interns elsewhere too.)
I stayed with friends but you're looking at more than £100/wk to rent anywhere.
Some clubs are good. Can generally get a cheap drink in the city (if you look in the right place.)
Yes, BP has a very active CSR program.
