    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I work as a scientist and spend the majority of my time in the laboratory either running experiments or analysing data for multiple projects. Aside from this, there are meetings and opportunities to be involved in, either presenting your work to colleagues and getting feedback, or developing other transferable skills.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've developed new skills in process safety, use of robots in automation and new ways of working within bio-catalysis. I've further developed general laboratory skills, improved in 2D NMR analysis by attending work-shops and seeking guidance from colleagues, and improved presentation skills through meetings with colleagues and attending symposiums.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. Your work is your own and how you progress through it is up to you. Supervisors and project leads guide what you are investigating, but the experimental work and analysis is yours. There is also the opportunity to take on extra responsibility by helping organise events, taking on roles during meetings or helping with laboratory improvements.

  • It was an incredibly satisfying and enjoyable year. The work has been meaningful and I have learnt far more about working in a laboratory environment and research than if I had stayed in university. I cannot recommend it enough.
