Overview
I work as a scientist and spend the majority of my time in the laboratory either running experiments or analysing data for multiple projects. Aside from this, there are meetings and opportunities to be involved in, either presenting your work to colleagues and getting feedback, or developing other transferable skills.
Skills
I've developed new skills in process safety, use of robots in automation and new ways of working within bio-catalysis. I've further developed general laboratory skills, improved in 2D NMR analysis by attending work-shops and seeking guidance from colleagues, and improved presentation skills through meetings with colleagues and attending symposiums.
Responsibilities
Yes. Your work is your own and how you progress through it is up to you. Supervisors and project leads guide what you are investigating, but the experimental work and analysis is yours. There is also the opportunity to take on extra responsibility by helping organise events, taking on roles during meetings or helping with laboratory improvements.
Support & Guidance
Everyone is there to help and wants to see you succeed, you just need to ask them. If you are unsure how to do something, asking for supervision and guidance is encouraged.
Culture
Incredibly warm and welcoming. Everyone is friendly and interested in what you are doing. Work culture is very mature as well. If there is too much work, or your wellbeing is falling you are encouraged to seek help and speak to your line manager so adjustments in workload or support can be put in place.
Your Impressions
It was an incredibly satisfying and enjoyable year. The work has been meaningful and I have learnt far more about working in a laboratory environment and research than if I had stayed in university. I cannot recommend it enough.

Tailor your CV to your job description, learn the values of AstraZeneca and put your best self forward. Being the best at chemistry is only half the battle. Try your best to get other work experience to really prove you have the experience they are wanting and that you are a well-rounded individual who can be relied upon.
