Overview
I worked in the Science Discovery Department where our primary focus is to is to guide the future strategic direction of the organisation, scientifically evaluating novel technologies and identifying potential business opportunities or threats. I manage scientific proof-of-concept studies, work with external collaborators, read scientific papers and discuss potencial project ideas. Day-to-day activities vary but involves placement team meetings, team meetings, skill development activities, independent study, project planning, lab work etc..
Skills
Critical analysis through journal club. Organisational awarness - how scienctific projects help the buisness. Presentation skills through presneting a poster and end of year presentation. communication skills through various networking opportunities. Lab skills in cell culture and gas chromotography. Teamwork through intern activities.
Responsibilities
I had the responsibility of managing a small-scale human study and in viro experiement. But had lots of guidence and support throughout.
Support & Guidance
Lots, there is a designated placement team of about 10 internal R&D BAT employees who are very friendly and give lots of guidence and advice. I had a senior mentor and buddy as well as a line manager. BAT employees very friendly and kind people.
Culture
Everyone is so friendly and happy to help with any queries you have. People are passionate about what they do. Senior leadership team encorporate the BAT values. people are generally happy to work at BAT.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship at BAT. I had enough responsibility that I felt like I was doing something meaningful. I have developed so many skills that will help my personal development and career. everyone is so friendly. The projects I was working on were really interesting. It felt like I was doing the sort of work I do at uni but I had a more structured schedule, weekends off and was getting payed.
