Overview
As a design intern, I assist in design projects and have my own year-long project. I work alongside UX, CMF and industrial designers. I attend and lead meetings. I work across different categories, collaborating with scientists, engineers and brand specialists. Each day I have tine for extra individual learning, such as knowledge on 3D printing.
Skills
CAD skills, end-to-end design knowledge, 3D printing knowledge, leadership skills, public speaking skills, UX and CMF knowledge.
Responsibilities
Yes, a decent amount. Most of the time I was not treated like an intern which is great. I was put on some live projects which had deadlines. However, I would say expectations were not that high and I was not given super high responsibility jobs.
Support & Guidance
I feel like if I wanted to support I could go to anyone in my team or company. I would say everyone was welcoming and keen to help if I wanted it. I would say I lacked some key design guidance as colleagues do not often work collaboratively.
Culture
In my office, the social culture really lacked. It is quite a corporate environment so people were less social. I experienced better atmosphere in other offices.
Your Impressions
I highly enjoyed my placement. It was amazing to feel part of a real life design team, getting stuck in my company projects. Nearly everyone has been supportive, welcoming and friendly. I found it an amazing location to work in - central London has a great vibe! This meant that I was not too bothered about the social culture as I was always busy in London outside of work.
Yes
It is a great space to grow as a person as well as you specific skill. I find BAT do not work you too hard so do not worry - its a 9-5 - they expect you to stop at 5pm. Be confident and have knowledge of what you are talking about! Come with a smile on your face and show that you are willing to work hard and aid the company.
