Overview
Assisting on a range of different projects carrying out varying tasks such as (but not limited to) drawing mark ups / reviews, report writing, Revit modelling and visual work. Despite being here for a year there is still a strong sense of involvement within the direct team and other colleagues in the office and the activities that is brought with Motts work environment.
Skills
Yes - understanding architecture within a large scale professional environment has not only improved software awareness and skill set improvement but gaining the knowledge of how a practice actually functions day to day.
Responsibilities
The more time passes during the placement the team gains a better understanding of your capabilities. With this the more responsibility within projects can be given. This said, there is also opportunity to ask for help when unsure if given a task outside of your comfort zone or understanding. Outside of work in the office and an office team dynamic - feeling well integrated within a team allows you to undertake responsibility - for example putting a socials schedule together, or booking places for team events.
Support & Guidance
With a large team with ranging skill sets, if they are involved in the project or not, there is always someone at the other end of a teams call or in the office. Help is readily available and is promoted to ask instead of struggle with something you wont be able to solve. Its better to ask than not.
Culture
Good - there are events within the team and the wider office. Office events may be during the day or after work or even weekends. There is a really strong sense of community at Motts and its clear that for some colleagues are also good friends.
Your Impressions
Its been good. I have enjoyed my time at Motts and learned a lot. After finishing my undergraduate degree I was ready to go to work. The time on this placement has made me realise that I am now looking forward to going back to complete my Part 2 degree to apply all I have learned. Its provided me with a direction and clearer understanding of what I want out of my career.
Yes
Understand the type of work that Motts do - they are a large company that has a lot of moving parts. They arent a traditional smaller architectural practice - this was interesting to see how the company functioned. I think understanding the scale of work you will do is important to give an idea of the work you may be doing.
