    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • An average day included a combination of practice overview/insight sessions hosted for the entire cohort, and individual tasks set by our supervisors in the designated practice area we were assigned for the duration of the scheme. These tasks varied according to supervisor/practice area but included, for example, contract/document proofreading, legal research, blog research, etc. On some days we would also have cohort-wide networking sessions in the evenings with other solicitors in the firm. We also had a project set by trainee recruitment, which we worked on during both weeks. We were able to take responsibility for how exactly we wanted to structure our time and take on different tasks, and were also encouraged to set up coffee chats with other solicitors in the firm whose work we were interested in.

  • Some of the skills I have developed as a result of this scheme include attention to detail, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management and self-management.

    Business Insight

  • 3. What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
  • We were given a clear oversight of how a career in law would progress and what our next steps would be post-vacation scheme. The opportunity to talk to more senior solicitors during networking events and in our own time also enabled us to find out more about this.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Linklaters prides itself on its open and collaborative culture, which is something that I was definitely able to observe during the Vacation Scheme. Although any firm will have some sort of hierarchy, the people at Linklaters were extremely friendly and talkative regardless of their position. Talking to partners and associates about their work was very much encouraged, and the atmosphere felt quite casual.

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this insight experience; I feel that I was able to learn a lot about the firm's work, clients, expertise and practice areas, as well as getting to know the team I was placed in.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Linklaters
  • To really think about Linklaters and what distinguishes it from other Magic Circle law firms and other competitors, and to have a good idea of its practice areas. Also, try to have a good idea of some of the deals it has recently been involved in (but make sure that they are ones that generally interest you) and be prepared to talk about why it interests you. Listen to the news/ subscribe to emails on business/general updates, as this will allow you to take broader trends and news stories into consideration during the assessment centre. Finally, keep Linklaters' agile mindset framework in the back of your mind when answering motivational and competency-type questions.
