About You
I really enjoyed the second week of the placement as it involved time spent in a school teaching and observing. However, the first week was taxing in the sense that it felt repetitive, tedious and just long on the whole. Thirdly, the last day could have been a lot shorter, just wanted to g o home.
All the time 100%. The teach first staff are amazingly helpful and caring. Furthermore, the school at which I was positioned was amazingly welcoming and instantly welcomed us I to the family. Overall, felt very welcomed and valued during the placement and it was probably one of the redeeming features.
Lots. We got lots of preparatory work to ensure we were prepared. We also had to keep a ‘diary’ throughout the weeks to send
All throughout the placement the 10 competencies were stressed and drilled repetitively. I feel that I have definitely improved in these specific areas which has been documented throughout the weeks in the form of self reflection. They will definitely assist in my degree in the form of helping me tackle problems in different ways.
The Company
Very well in terms of organising transport and accommodation. However, the first week was too long and spread over 4 days. It would have been more tangible to be over 5 and not be as long because by 3 pm I was not listening! However the second week in the school was very well organised.
Really professional, everyone was very friendly and all wanted to be there. I made some lovely friends during the second week especially. The staff at the school were very into what they were doing, and the staff at insight were very enthused by what they were doing and presenting to us.
Very well. They kept drilling the competencies which make up the teach first ethos and they really worked well with the subjects being taught. Working closely in groups to understand these competencies really helped to understand teach first more. The teach first movement was key in the programme and employing it in the schools in the second week.
Everything Else
Definitely. It’s a brilliant incentive to do the placement and make it accessible to people of lower income where it is only the money which caused them to question doing it. I think teach first really do well in paying you as well as you get the money really soon after the placement.
Not overly great. They all involved going to the pub and after a long day the last thing I wanted was to stay indoors for a longer duration. It probably worked for some but not me, I don’t drink. Furthermore, there was a serious lack of networking events in general.
I would because I think it’s a very important issue (the lack of maths and science teachers) which needs to be addressed so that all kids have equal opportunities to progress into any area of life they wish. Getting as many people to do this programme as possible is key to this.
