About You
I very much enjoyed the 2 weeks' time at Goldman Sachs. It was a challenging exposure to GIR and I learnt a great deal in my time at the firm, meeting professionals, attending Teach Ins, having desk time and so forth. If you are looking for a challenge that is also balanced by a great culture, this is the spring that you should apply for.
Having my own employee card, my own desk space and a lot of access to numerous materials, meant that I was definitely valued as an intern. The work that I, in my team, completed over the two weeks will actually be used in a final report by the firm, so there is an element of impact made. Further, the willingness of professionals to meet for coffees and tell me more about their journeys meant that we were seen as important, too. Everyone was willing to help, provided we were also giving it our all. Having round tables with senior partners was also a reflection that we were genuinely given time to learn from some of the top people in this industry.
Ranging from feedback from many sources, regular drop-in sessions when completing the project work, to having access to Goldman's internal systems that gave guidance on a wide range of areas in GIR. Networking was a major source of guidance when wanting to ask more personal or bespoke questions and I enjoyed this element of the program especially.
As a Biochemistry 西瓜视频, I gained a great deal of transferable skills that will help me better use Excel. As a GIR intern, the structured approach to writing will help me in my essays as the concision required in communicating views will be highly transferable. The approach to time management and being focused on work priorities in immediate (day), longer (week) and longer still (months), is a great element of corporate life that I will take back to University. Learning a great amount about GIR and its teams and functions is especially valuable and I hope to build on what I've learnt at Goldman when I go back to UCL.
The Company
Very structured. We had access to our timetable throughout the program and could see the jam-packed schedule that the organisation had produced for us. I used it to my advantage to help plan the day (and evenings in the office, occasionally!) as well as whether I was on target with whatever metric I was judging myself on at that time. This was without doubt, one of the strongest areas of this internship.
In short, fun but challenging! The overarching theme was collaboration and individual performance. The atmosphere was very much what you saw in it and made it to be - we all tried to come in everyday to learn something new and be the best version of ourselves. I made great friends in this internship that I will be keeping in touch with long after it is over, and that is owing to the culture of collaboration that encouraged us to all get to know one another on quite a deep level.
The firm invested a huge amount in us, both financially as well as in building skills for us, whether in learning how to value companies and stocks, as well as building great soft skills and presentation skills. I've learnt a huge amount over my time at GS.
Meeting a wide range of people allowed me be achieve this aim, as well as through the formal sessions. It was really what you made of it - I tried to be involved across all areas of firm life, and so I was able to get this exposure.
100% - this was emphasized repeatedly and through interactions with professionals from all backgrounds, from metals to consumer staples, I was able to understand first hand the company culture. The farewell talk by Richard Gnodde helped reinforce this - but Richard also emphasized that it is something the firm works hard to maintain.
The intensity of the work definitely allows one to understand of this career path is for you - there is no better way to learn other than meeting as many different people as possible ranging across the banking hierarchy. The teach-ins, networking events and round tables helped me certain this.
Everything Else
Yes, as mentioned in earlier questions there was ample opportunity for this.
A mixture of firm-wide opportunities via socials and Goldman network events, but also smaller scale networking events as mentioned above. They ranged in level of formality, from social drinks with interns and other professionals working in the business areas, but also more formal events with those more senior, as mentioned in the round tables.
Yes - from firm-wide networks, to various other amnesties such as the in-house gym and volunteering opportunities, there is plenty to do outside work too. Again, it is what you as an individual make of the process.
Yes - if they are keen to learn more about the industry then they should apply for this opportunity to learn whether research is for them - by the end of the two weeks, you will find out whether this area is for you, just as I have. On the whole, yes.
