About You
I enjoyed the Securities spring insight programme a lot as we attended firmwide sessions, networking events, and training sessions. We even had the privilege of speaking to MD/partners at very personal sessions and asked them questions. We also had the chance to rotate around 15 desks on the trading floor.
All the people at the firm are so nice and approachable. The securities division employees clearly put a strong focus on us as they gave up their precious time and spent half an hour to an hour patiently explaining trading concepts, what they do and also helped us on stock pitches.
If there is anything we are unsure about, there is always HR to help answering our questions. If coming to things more technical, we can also ask anyone on the trading floor. Just don't be afraid to ask, people there could be busy some of the times but they will always be willing to help you if they are available.
We had a much more in-depth understanding in securities division at Goldman across all asset classes and teams. We were also given group quizzes and stock pitches that help to improve our teamwork and communication skills. I have learnt to be more confident and open-minded when and will apply this to future career.
The Company
The programme has a very organised structure. We had firmwide orientation on the first day. Second day is more division-specific where senior people in different teams would come and speak to us about what they do. Third day we would have training on equities and FICC to help us to get prepared for the desk rotations in the following 5 days.
There are 44 spring interns in securities division. All of us come from very different backgrounds. The atmosphere is generally very collaborative and people are very nice. The employees here are approachable, well-driven and entrepreneurial. The nature of securities division is that people all sit closely to each other and there is always communication between salespeople, structuring guys, traders and strats.
Goldman has clearly invest a lot on us as they invited very senior people at the firm to come and speak to us. They also planned this two week paid internship and structured it so well. We had a training before going onto the trading floor and it clearly helped us to be prepared.
It is two-week long and we had one hour rotation for each desk. Even though it may not give us so much of insight compared to summer internships or placements. It definitely is better than spring weeks at other firms as it is much longer and gives you to opportunities to shadow for 5 days.
The people here are very entrepreneurial as they all approach questions in different ways. They also come from very diverse backgrounds and bring in a variety of skillsets to the firm. The culture is collaborative especially the commodities team which they would hang out on weekends. It is certainly essential to be collaborative to succeed as a whole.
It was very valuable. Before coming to this spring insight, I thought I would be interested in trading more. However, now I am open-minded and actually enjoy both sales and trading. The programme gave us the opportunity to rotate around 15 different desks in commodities, equities, currency, interest rates, credit and emerging markets.
Everything Else
