About You
It was really good, more useful than other things I've done as the internship was much more work focused instead of just talks. The only thing that was annoying was not understanding how they assessed us for a summer, as I was more inclined to go to divisions that don't give feedback to HCM. Appart from that stress, the internship was set up perfectly
I felt very valued, everyone on the trading floor treated me with excitement and like a proper employee at the company. We were also given some projects and stock pitches which people were more than willing to help us out with. There were some times when people were too busy to talk to you but they would always get back to you. Also a bunch of partners were willing to meet us which was very exciting.
As I've already mentioned, the factors HCM take into account when seeing if you'd be a good fit for summer are quite vague, but the guidance in terms of learning and seeing how securities functions. Each of the teams I spoke to were very informative and gave good explainations of different financial aspects
In terms of the industry, this insight will be really beneficial to my future career. I've learnt so much and knowing how Goldman Sachs works as an organisation has given me a greater understanding of how investment banks trade and manage client's assets. I feel better placed to make decisions about my future.
The Company
The first 3 days was classroom learning and then we got desk rotations and 'free time' in which to see people and desks that interested us. I think this set up worked well, some of the talks could have been a little bit more simple but overall worked well before we were unleashed onto the trading floor
It was good, my internship class was nice which helped. Obviously adjusting to the early wake up times from uni was a bit of a challenge but coming in early for team meetings was very much worth it. Goldman Sachs has a good focus on teamwork and that definitely shone through.
The firm was very good at providing us with all the best opportunities, from meeting partners to having buddies to mentor us. I was shocked at how early on in the process we got introduced to people from high up in the company (getting to speak to partners in a networking event on the second day!)
I did a Goldman Sachs insight day last year and that was useful in finding out more about the firm in general but that was nothing compared to seeing how people spend their days at work and talking one on one with traders. I definitely have a better understanding to how Goldman operates
As I said before, Goldman is much more of a team focused company than I realized. Obviously the employees are very competitive but that is a lot more healthy than I expected, with the focus being on competing with yourself than your co workers. Plus the facilities on sight shows the care they take with their employees, with a gym and child centre on site
I am definitely more attracted to a career in securities than before (I barely knew what they did before I got here so that is an improvement) and I hope to come back and build on the knowledge I have of the job. Definitely excited to trade in the future
Everything Else
Money was good (拢800 for two weeks)
As I mentioned before, we got to go to a networking event on the second day where we could talk to partners and other higher ups in the firm on a peronal level (face to face). Also we were encouraged to reach out to VPs and people above the normal analyst level
Very good, there were lunches as well as evening events with the various networks so it was all very exciting. Everyone was willing to talk to you and as long as you had questions, they were very excited to hear them. Free drinks and food was always very much appreciated
Yes, as I previously mentioned there is an onsite gym and multiple classes. Apart from that, I only really heard about football matches with other firms, however we were mainly there to work so it isn't a big loss. Some other interns were invited to drinks with certain employees but that was only for certain people
100%, as a way to get onto summer it is a bit more stressful, esp. since I was just doing what I felt like before realizing that they were assessing us but before that it was a really good experience and as long as you have an open mind and curiosity, you'll enjoy your time here
