About You
The ability to be a part of a community and have a sense of belonging. They take you step by step through the day to day transactions. The people here have time for you no matter how senior. The best part I would say about having access to all that, is that new ideas are always welcome.
I felt I could identify with Goldman Sachs due to how diverse the cultures and backgrounds are. I have no background in business and finance, but even with my degree in computer Science I was still able to grasp terminology and concepts.
There were several opportunities to shadow different sub divisions within my division. I took advantage of them and ensured that the units I had an interest in would give me a deeper understanding of what they do on a day to day. In terms of technical and social support the feedback culture is pretty healthy.
They apply in areas such as project management, time management, building a work ethic and also collaboration. i would highlight collaboration more at Goldman Sachs because it is because of this, there is ease of mobility in the firm.
The Company
Well structured. The insight was two weeks long. May have been an overload of information but the real question is to see whether Goldman Sachs thinks you are the best fit for them and to also gauge whether Goldman Sachs is the perfect fit for you. You also get to learn more about the things you thought you knew but really did not have an insight on.
I would say several things. The space is safe, supportive, diverse and always has an opportunity for people to learn more about the industry, their positions, teams and themselves.
They were able to accommodate me in the most hospitable manner possible. I appreciated that HR was able to sit down and chat to tell you places you are doing well in and places you need to improve. They settled my flight, accommodation and I had a stipend over the insight period for my up keep.
The insight help me identify what I wanted to know based on the Operations Investment banking division. There were short snippets of what the program would provide and what a day-to-day would look like for most positions in the firm. A full time role would allow me to learn more about myself.
I know that I need to apply myself more and discover better ways of dealing with burnout. Goldman Sachs has a support culture where by volunteers are availed to you for times you need someone to talk to. Not only that but also people who deal with anxiety or depression are heavily supported.
The content of the day allowed me to see that the Operations division is definitely the place for me. The skills that I have acquired and built on apply in the division and allow for mobility and learning opportunities. You get to see how different division innovate and integrate in the firm.
Everything Else
There was a reimbursement system where people paid for transport to the office through out the program. There was also stipend that allowed you to keep up with the day to day expenses during your time in the firm. An added advantage is access to various food spots.
There are affinity networks, firm wide sessions, divisional networking sessions that allowed me to talk to other people and learn and inquire more about their experiences in the firm. There is definitely places you can find a support group. A good example is the LGBT affinity network. You could simply be an ally to be part of the network.
They were all insightful and diverse. Not one session was the same and there was always something new to learn from the full time employees. This gave chances to meet people you may have a common interest with. There are also opportunities to shadow these people even though they are not in the same department as you are.
There is a recreational center. The firm participates in a lot of community service. there is also opportunity for travel globally within the firm. Within the recreational aspect, there are fitness classes you can join to be a part of the fitness teams in the firm. There are also opportunities to be a part of various groups in the firm and be a part of the activities the groups are involved in.
I would definitely recommend this to a friend. If you enjoy intense fast paced, structured, flat hierarchy environments. The rewards are tremendous; such as job satisfaction. Many people have stayed within the firm for over 19 years.
