    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • Enjoyable placement, due to being around loads of other like minded interns and getting to experience what it is actually like to work at the firm. Lots of social/networking events and the fact that they put most of the interns in the same hotel means that its easy to make new friends.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • For the most part interns are treated like full time employees, including access to pretty much all facilities/areas as actual staff. Interns can also sign up for sports classes, and use employee cafeteria etc. Being put up in a nice central London hotel for the two weeks also showed Goldman really cared about it's interns.

    4/5

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • At the start of the insight interns are paired up with a "buddy" who is like a mentor already working within the company. This means that it is easy to have questions answered and get advice on how to do certain things within the firm. Plus most other staff members were happy to help.

    5/5

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a lot about the different technologies and skills required to work at Goldman, which will help when I decide between modules in the next two years of my degree. I also learned a large amount of finance specific knowledge, which will help if I decide to get a job in this sector.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The structure is quite open ended, while there are scheduled shadowing sessions/talks, there is also free time. For engineering we were given a two week project, the idea being you complete it during the free time. We were also encouraged to set up our own meetings with employees to learn more/network.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • General atmosphere was fairly full-on, but most interns on the engineering insight were definitely more relaxed than some of the other divisions (in terms of the hours worked). We were reminded that while part of the spring week was for Goldman to assess whether we would be a good fit for the firm, it was also an opportunity to work out if it was a place we actually wanted to work.

    5/5

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invested large amounts of staff time into provided talks and work shadowing in order to train the interns in the various processes carried out. In addition, we were encouraged to make the most of networking opportunities for even life outside of Goldman Sachs. It was clear that the firm has put a large amount of effort into the spring programe.

    5/5

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • On the whole fairly good due to all of the chances we had to chat to full time employees. In terms of the actual work the interns were given, it was less representative of the actual engineering done within the company. This is not surprising given the short time period of only two weeks, it would be unrealistic to have us writing actual code for the company.

    5/5

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • We were told a lot about company culture in presentations, but I'm still not quite sure I understand what is meant by that. I think that in such a large company the subdivisions have their own culture, so it is hard to generalise it across the company. But there is certainly a focus on collaboration.

    5/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Very helpful, it was taught me an enormous amount on what Engineering is like within a large finance institution. Learning about every division and the technology involved will inform me on my further education and job applications. It also gave me a good insight into working in a large city such as London.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Pay was very generous for a two week internship, and Goldman also payed for two weeks rent at a nearby for all interns unable to commute in daily. Considering the fact that the work done by spring interns is less useful to the firm, it is impressive that they are willing to pay.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were loads of opportunities for networking, including four or five dedicated events for all interns, and the fact we were encouraged to network with employees within the company just by sending them an email to set up a coffee meet up. On the whole most employees were happy to help, and if not it was because they were very busy.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Networking opportunities were good on the whole, including lunch, drinks, nibbles etc. There was also pizza lunch for engineers and for a diversity event. Only improvement would be for one of the evening sessions where food ran out, on the whole they were great and I got to chat to lots of interesting people.

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • I learned about a few of the sports/musical activities some employees take part in, and interns were encouraged to make use of the sports classes provided for free. I regret not taking part, I had friends who did a meditation session which was apparently very relaxing, almost to the point of sleeping.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • For sure, I would recommend the insight to anyone who wants to learn more about Engineering within a finance firm, even if they are not sure. For me it was a great way to learn about the industry and a lot less commitment compared to getting a summer internship or full time job.
