    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The insight was very enjoyable. I was working within the GIR division alongside 13 other interns, and one of the most enjoyable aspects was networking with my peers. The people we had the opportunity to network with who worked in the division were all very approachable and keen to share their experiences, which helped us all to feel welcomed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • A lot of care was taken throughout the Insight to highlight the value of human capital and finding/retaining the best people to Goldman Sachs. It was clear that a lot of effort had been put into making the two weeks helpful and interesting, which made me feel valued. Additionally, wtihin my division the interns were given a project to complete that would form a part of real and on-going research, which was incredibly exciting.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Days 2 and 3 included technical training sessions, which we shared with the IBD interns. These were incredibly well run with a fantastic teacher, and gave us all the grounding we needed to be able to engage in more interesting work and understand at a very high level some of the concepts that we used later.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Technically, I don't think the skills I developed will be particularly useful for my Science degree. However, having a basic understanding of some parts of finance will give me a fantastic leg-up in any finance related work I do after University. Additionally, the skills of time management, prioritization, questioning, and engaging with highly experienced senior people will be very useful in so many aspects of my future.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The Insight structure gave a very natural progression across the two weeks. Sessions were generally slightly shorter and higher level at the beginning of the insight, giving us a broad introduction and an opportunity to meet the senior people that we would later get to talk to for longer, once we knew more and could have a more engaging and beneficial discussion. The training provided all the fundamentals required, and plenty of sources of help were offered (buddies, recruiters, specialised researchers) to answer any questions we had along the way.

    5/5

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere surprised me in how open it was. We reconvened every day or two with the whole class of interns for sessions on diversity, presentation, current Goldman projects etc. which helped to foster an integrated feeling. The people we met were incredibly willing to help and give you 10 or 15 mins of their time to talk to you.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Training was provided for the interns in my division (one afternoon and one morning) combined with the Investment Banking interns. Additionally, another session was provided later by someone who works within GIR who taught us about valuation and the different valuation techniques used within the division when analysing different companies.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The hours we worked were a little shorter than those of an actual GIR BA, which I think probably makes quite a big difference. Typical GIR hours are 7am-7pm, while we came in normally at 8 or 9 and stayed until 6ish. In terms of doing actual work, we had a project and some case study sessions which gave us a bit of insight, but obviously it's much more slow paced and spoon fed than the real thing.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The culture of Goldman was probably brought up by every employee that we spoke to and at every talk we attended, which I found very interesting. It is clearly something that they are very proud of, and I think they are very invested in breaking the negative stereotype about investment bankers. One cultural aspect that I think made a real impression on me, was the diversity. Our intern class majority spoke multiple languages, had lived in multiple countries etc. In terms of representation of women, ethnic minorities etc. it appeared to be pretty representative of the actual populations in the country.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I still don't know for certain what I want to do, but the insight definitely gave me a lot of exposure and the tools to make a more informed decision later on. There's literally not a better way to get exposure to the financial sector in my opinion, as other Spring Weeks are shorter and much more high-level.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • A fixed payment was given for the internship, which I received. Reimbursement was on offer for travel expenses for people who did not live in London and were staying here for the two weeks. Additionally, accommodation was provided for these people which I believe was free. As a Londoner who commuted each day, I was not reimbursed any travel expenses.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • While there wasn't a big firm-wide networking event with employees, which I would have enjoyed, there was definitely a lot of opportunity to make contacts within GIR. For example, we had 45 minute teach-ins from different teams within GIR on their research, buddies, panels etc. For more one-on-one interactions, the impetus had to come from you as an intern. There was always the opportunity to reach out and connect more with people you found interesting.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There was a firm-wide networking event exclusively for interns. While this was a nice opportunity to talk to my peers in a less formal setting, most people only talked to those within their division who they already knew. I would have really liked to have the opportunity to meet employees from a range of divisions.

    3/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • We were able to use the gym while here, which was nice. I didn't use it (no time!) and I don't know anyone that did, but the sentiment was appreciated. We also had a lot of introductions to the different Affinity Networks in GS, and even a couple of opportunities to attend events they held.

    4/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Absolutely! Even if they came out hating it, they would have learned something about themselves and also it is objectively really interesting to have an insight to how a multinational firm like Goldman operates, and see what they do day to day. Furthermore, I don't see how anyone could not enjoy the two weeks. It's truly an opportunity like no other.
