About You
Everyone in the Corporate Finance, Deals team that I was put in for my placement were really welcoming. I found that employees at all levels really made the effort to take the time out of their day to give me tasks, find out about me and answer my questions that I had.
We were assigned a buddy and a manager to shadow for the insight and we always had a recruiter to contact with any queries. This meant that we always had several contacts to message if we ever needed anything or did not know what we were supposed to be doing.
The Woman In Business shadowing week was the most immersive programme that I know of when I compare my experience to some of my friends at University. I felt that this experience has really helped to shape my idea of what I want to do beyond my degree due to having the chance to see all levels of professional development and take part in the actual work that PwC were working on.
The Company
The insight was not incredibly structured at all, however I would argue that this is actually one of the selling points of the insight. Due to being thrown in with a team and doing what they would typically be doing on the day you can't get an explicit outline of what you will be doing before you start the PwC insight. However by the end of the insight I was truly grateful for how realistic the insight was as I didn't feel that the firm 'put on' anything explicitly for me as an undergrad which a lot of other firms do and I feel this gave me a more authentic view of PwC.
I felt that this was an incredible experience for my own personal development and understanding of the professional world. All the training is the experiences that the insight itself gives you. As the insight is only for three days I was pleasantly surprised that there was a half day induction own personal awareness, careers development and interview help.
Due to being fully immersed in the company, I cannot fault the programme at all in this respect. I was shadowing in a pair and we both got to see all the different aspects of the firm within the deals department that we applied for. As we shadowed a manager closely we got an overview of several projects that she was working on at the time.
Everything Else
I was paid very swiftly after completing the insight. I would say that the lunches at PwC are quite expensive so it is perhaps worth considering bringing a packed lunch as there is no lunch allowance. However at the same time this may make you less flexible as we had a team lunch which was a really nice way to network with the team in a more informal setting.
There was excellent opportunities to network with colleagues in the wider department that you were working in. The female business leader that I was shadowing had an incredibly positive attitude to introducing me to as many people as she could. A proactive attitude is also essential here as I found that once I shared my interests, people started to introduce me to more people who worked in these areas. There was not however opportunity to network with the wider firm - perhaps due to how short the insight is.
When talking to team members I found a lot about all the charity and networks that you can be involved with while working at PwC. I also learnt a lot about the company culture in terms of teams going out to celebrate outside of work when they have successfully completed a deal which I thought was great and something that I look forward to.
I would definitely recommend this insight to a friend. It is the most authentic first year insight programme that I know about in the consulting world and allows you to get to know a team on a personal one-to-one basis and allows all your specific questions to be answered by the people who are actually doing the job! What's more, everyone at PwC had a great attitude towards me as an undergrad on an insight which was very reassuring as someone who has never done something like this before.
