The Role
We had two rotations, which provided me the opportunity to engage in different business units, which is very useful in learning how different teams work, both in the business and also technically. We also had many interesting activities, hackathon, capture the flag, mentoring circles etc, which allowed me to meet and network with many more colleagues.
My colleagues treated my questions very seriously, they also ask for my opinions on questions that the team have encountered, and also general suggestions. They invited me to meetings both in the team, across different teams and firm wide so that I was able to engage in the wider picture in how the team operates.
I met up with my manager very frequently discussing my project progress and at the same time address any questions that I might have. They also provide me with additional reading materials as well as point me in a general direction where I can seek further development for my career and personal development.
My days are very coding based. I receive a task which involves developing a strategy from scratch. I will spend some time learning relevant materials, code, debug. I also have many meetings everyday, catching up with manager and colleagues. Throughout the internship, I also participate in events organised by the firm. Hackthons, capture the flag etc.
My first rotation, I had to develop a strategy from scratch and present it to my team at the end of project presentation. Since I need to deliver a rather complete solution, a lot of responsibility were given to me as what I am working on closely relates to the business. On the second rotation, I am part of the team working with my colleagues on our top priority project.
I have developed team working, self learning, communication and many other transferable skills. I believe the ability to seek resources and learn on my own in order to solve a problem is quite important. Team working, a lot of tasks cannot be done by a single person's effort, and many different people have different strengths, collaboration is very important in a lot of situations.
The Company
it is very casual in my office, during the second month, we had the opportunity to dress casual in office. The atmosphere is very flat, you will be able to reach anyone for help quite easily. There is also many social events organised after work where the whole team can get together talking.
Very Organised. We have mid term and end of term reviews. We frequently set up meetings with manager discussing about the progress. We also have mentoring circles where a group of mentees get together with their mentor to talk about general topics. HCM is also very readily to help anything that you need.
We had a week of life lessons/ financial theory training. Throughout the programme, there is technical help sessions, during the first weeks, every day a team present their product and work to us for us to get a better idea of how each team work differently. If I need anything, my manager and buddy is also there to help.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
I believe the company is looking to expand and therefor they put a lot of effort into recruiting bright people. HCM have different groups target different universities both in UK and around the world, and they constantly ask our opinion on how they can develop the experience of the internship programme better.
The Culture
Many socials and events are organised throughout the internship. Intern picnics, drinks, city community work days, trips to historical attractions. There is also many senior spotlight sessions where interns get the chance to engage in conversations with senior people. Individual team also organised team dinners, breakfast and drinks.
Average rent in London.
Mostly companies around areas, therefore not many people at night time and shops closes quite early.
Definitely! Working hours is quite flexible and if you need to be absent for a day it's not a problem at all. Do not need to work extra hours on the weekends therefore our free and can engage in many other exciting activities out side of work. Company also organised events and sports tournaments.
