The Role
The internship was great because the interns had their own personal project to work on throughout, meaning there was little time spent with no work, mindlessly browsing sites like I've experienced at other places. Colleagues were all motivated to get me involved with work including learning day to day work, despite it adding extra work for them in the long run. Everyone was approachable throughout the placement, and I was able to turn to anyone for advice and guidance (whether on the project or otherwise) even though they are not in my immediate team. All the staff are equally open to interns interacting with other teams and sitting with various professionals to learn about different areas of the division. HCM are supportive and friendly and only interact with interns minimally as to not intrude on our ability to perform our day to day tasks which is great. Overall, the firm has an attitude of continually being challenged, professional growth and development and to always get stuck into the work. The level of motivation among the colleagues is contagious and a great place to grow yourself.
I felt truly like part of the team. I was included in day to day projects early, and was accountable to my work throughout. If I made a mistake I would be the one to fix it when flagged by a manager, not someone else in the team. This gave me a true, warts-and-all picture of the job, which is exactly what you want in an internship. Therefore, I felt like I was adding to the team, especially towards the end of the internship when I had learnt the day-to-day tasks. Also, everyone was aware that my personal project has the potential to have a large positive impact to the team, so they were all equally motivated to help me when required on the project.
The level of interaction with managers is great. It is also flexible so can be adjusted based on what you feel you need. The level of detail on feedback is reassuring and helps young professionals grow in the right areas, by identifying the most crucial areas of development early on in the careers. Managers seem to take interns seriously, and discuss our performance amongst other senior professionals often to help us as much as they can.
I found myself to be quite busy on a daily basis. As an intern, you have the flexibility to take on, and turn down work as required and determined by your schedule which can include HCM sessions as well as personal project commitments. There is scope to take on projects from other managers, but I would run this by my own managers first in case they have a different plan to give you the best experience. Since it's a 10 week internship, most interns took on enough work to keep them busy for most of the day and make full use of the placement.
I was working on real work from quite early on. My work was labeled as mine and nobody was trying to take credit for it. Equally, my mistakes would also be mine to amend when picked up by a manager and returned to me for editing. The feedback is useful as it kept me motivated to keep trying throughout the placement, instead of getting bored of doing the same thing half way through.
Time management and prioritization was key throughout the placement in order to manage the workload and prevent falling behind on work. I will take these useful skills to do as well as I can in my final year of studies. Moreover, the soft skills you learn at a placement at Goldman Sachs is second to none. Being able to talk to professionals of all ranks and seniority is a skill that doesn't come naturally to everyone, but can help the careers of many people. A placement such as this can prepare you for those skills ahead of a graduate scheme where such skills will be useful.
The Company
People were always up for a discussion or conversation, whether it be social or work related. There was an aura of intense motivated focus, which was inspiring and invited me to give my work my best shot. However, when I needed, people were willing to help to inordinate lengths if they saw any value in it. The office felt like a growth-oriented environment to work in.
HCM had sessions and time slots planned well in advance so that the internship would run seamlessly, especially at the beginning when we had no day-to-day tasks. The first impressions of the firm were great due to the level of detail that HCM worked at. HCM sessions were communicated early so that we could accommodate it around our busy schedules.
There were many firmwide training sessions in the first week of the internship. We were pleased to find that Asset Servicing (sub division) had it's own 2 week training programme to help us gain the necessary knowledge to successfully work in the team as well as get to know our colleagues. This gave us a great foundation for the rest of the internship, and also if we came back on a graduate scheme. What's more great is that this training is not team-specific so we got to learn about a wide range of software and teams.

Goldman Sachs is a company where I see myself have a career which is challenging and one which helps me reach my potential. The general mindset of the workforce is that of motivation, intellectual curiosity and drive which is not only contagious but motivating as well. Such an environment is hard to turn down if given an offer, and assures me that it's a great place to work at if given the opportunity.
The Culture
Although less than average, this is to be expected from a place which contains very highly motivated individuals. People don't come here to have a great time, although that is part of most people's agendas. The frequency will be low but socials are possible if you are willing to arrange it. However, impressing teams will be the primary focus of many placement 西瓜视频s, which in itself is inspiring and motivating.
London is one of the most expensive cities to intern in, especially on a 西瓜视频 budget.
London has many bars and clubs, and usually meets the taste of most people that intern at Goldman Sachs. A more challenging job will be to find the time to make use of such places amongst a busy work and social calendar.
Community Team works is the firmwide initiative to allow 1 day a year on outside-of-work initiatives sourced out by the firm. This can involve work for NGOs and local organisation to support them in their everyday activities. However, at times (such as the Acton homeless concern) you may find yourself questioning what long lasting impact your work is actually having given that you help out on a single day a year in the day to day running of the organisation.
