The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement! Of course the days were long and you have days where you enjoy it less but overall the people were amazing, the placement runs so smoothly and you learn so much about the industry and the culture at Goldman. It gives you a real insight into what it would be like to work at the firm full time.
You do feel valued and useful to your team most of the time. It is difficult at times as you know it would be quicker for your colleague to do the work themselves rather than explain it to you and then you take a longer time on it as you inevitably will when you are learning. However 90% of the time people are willing to sit down and explain a task to you so that you can learn and be more helpful in the future.
You have so many levels of supported available to you during the internship. On a day to day basis, your team managers are less involved, you are more directed by the juniors on your team but this works well. You are also given a buddy, a mentor from the firm and a HR employee who are all there to help you if you are unsure about anything.
You are very busy!! As is expected. The internship is during summer, typically the quiet time of the year however on the whole you are still extremely busy, juggling work and internship presentations. However this is great as it makes the days fly by; at points you may feel overwhelmed but it is all about adapting to being so busy.
You are given a lot of responsibility - the work you are doing is on live projects and deals and is being seen by the client. Of course your work is checked by others on the team but what you are doing is directly helping the firm's clients. I have also sent emails directly out to clients which I never thought I'd do!
The technical skills I have learnt will not apply to my degree however, the soft skills you learn are so valuable. You learn how to be very organised and how to prioritse which tasks to do first. You learn how to write in a concise but factual way and how to keep your team members 'posted' on where you are at with your work. All of these skills are useful, whatever you do in the future.
The Company
It may surprise some people but the atmosphere, at least on my floor, was very warm and relaxed. Of course, 90% of the time everyone is focused on work however there are times throughout the day when you all have a chat about something totally unrelated to work. It was a great work environment.
The internship was seamless. This programme has been running for years and you can tell! From day 1 everyone is prepared for your arrival and the onboarding process is so smooth - you have your security pass photo taken on day 1 and you receive it on day 2! You receive weekly emails from HR with what's happening the following week and it keeps the whole programme running smoothly; you always know what is happening.
The firm invests a lot into you! On the first week of the internship we received 3 whole days of classroom training with online resources we can access for a whole year! There are weekly presentations from senior employees to expose you to all areas of the bank and there are online modules you can take if you want to learn more about a particular topic.

You are told by HR throughout the process that there are jobs available for everyone if you are all good enough and I believe this is the case. No one knows if they have secured a job yet but I imagine a large proportion of people will. Moving forward, the career progression you can see is enormous.
The Culture
In the first week there was a HR organised social for interns which was a great way to meet people. There was also a mid-internship networking session arranged. Other than that it is sometimes difficult to go out as a group as everyone is finishing at different times however interns did go out together after work.
You are in London so it is expensive! However you are earning well so you can afford it. When you go out for networking coffees/team drinks most of the time your work colleagues pay for you which is very kind of them!
As you are in London there are lots of bars and clubs in the local area. People are usually very up for Thursday night drinks and the local nightlife scene is always very busy.
There aren't too many organised by the firm - you are encouraged to join the gym if you want to. However, most of the time, you should have your weekends to do what you want with and to explore London but you do need to be prepared to go into the office at the weekend if needed.
