The Role
The internship (10 weeks) was a combination of skills sessions and networking sessions. This allowed me to gain useful technical skills and it also facilitated the building and managing of my network. Building and nurturing relationships is part of the firm's culture and I have fully enjoyed knowing people from diverse backgrounds.
The team that I was attached to included me in all meetings including global conference calls. I felt my contributions were taken seriously and I was given responsibilities that were for genuine work related objectives. I was not treated any differently to a permanent member of staff and this made me feel valued and welcomed.
I was allocated a buddy who was friendly and knowledgeable about the technical skills required to perform a job of an analyst. my buddy was available all the time to answer both technical and non-technical questions. In addition, I was also allocated an experienced associate to train me. My manager was available for weekly catch-ups where we discussed technical and non-technical aspects.
I was very busy and each week I clocked extra hours than the required. This was not because I was asked to stay on but because I would be deep into enjoyable tasks that I would not notice time going by. There were a variety of tasks which made it even more enjoyable.
I was responsible for a project that was not just a mock task but something that will live on after I my placement. This showed that the unit trusted me to do a good job and they valued my previous work experience. I was also allowed to manage my workload (no micro-managing) for as long as I was able to prioritise tasks.
I have already completed my degree studies. But the soft skills I learnt on the internship are not taught at university. I believe these skills will come in handy when I start a professional career. The internship has also exposed me to the world of financial instruments which I did not learn in my law degree. I believe this new knowledge adds value to my future work life.
The Company
The office was friendly and lively. Every member of staff was eager to know interns and genuinely happy to help. I found it easy to strike conversations about non-work related things such as sports. The teams were also interlinked where possible so it was easier to make connections across the division.
The graduate recruiters kept me informed about the processes during the selection process and also gave us a schedule of events lined up during the whole internship. The combination of skills sessions and social events was also well structured because it struck a good balance between worklife and social life.
I was part of in-house training sessions which were delivered by colleagues at all levels of the firm. The firm also ensured that we were exposed to training on a diverse roles so that we could become well informed of career opportunities across the firm. The time and efforts spent by the team to train me were very substantial. i was trained to the level where I could do the BAU.

The organisation encourages personal development and offers opportunities for growth. I felt as interns, we were given diverse assignments to showcase our employability. This allowed us to identify our strengths and weaknesses and work around these to improve our prospects of being permanently hired. I believe the firm would be a good place to start a career in the financial service industry.
The Culture
The interns had a good self-made network and we were able to meet outside the workplace for drinks, lunch or just catch-up coffees. As interns, we valued developing a network amongst ourselves just like we valued forming networks with permanent members of staff. I have enjoyed good professional and social interactions with my peers.
I lived outside London so i am not aware of accomodation costs. However, the cost of food and drinks is pretty high and one needs a sizable budget to socialise. The firm has very good kitchens so depending on personal choices you can skip high street cafes and eat within the building.
I lived outsiide London and I didnt experience much of nightlife.
As part of the internship, we were asked to volunteer one day at a charity of our choice (from a given list). This was to develop a heart of giving back to society. The day was a fully paid day. I found volunteering very fulfilling and this also spoke well about the firm's commitment to the community in which it carries its business.
