The Role
There was a rotational system in place in order to help you explore different desks and discover where you interests were. This was useful having not been in a bank before I had no idea where I would be best suited. We had both 1 hour rotations at the beginning and 1 week rotations throughout and as a result it made my experience very good.
I found everyone to be incredibly respectful and took time out of their day to spend with interns and help explain concepts. I felt like I could discuss on a professional level with them and that my views were taken into account. Equally, interns were respectful and looked out for each other.
Support was incredibly important throughout the internship and you could see that from a top down approach. There were MD mentors, HCM office hours for support and to help clear your mind, self reviews during the internship and reviews from employees to help develop yourself and to improve your skill set.
There is no lie that this is not an intense internship and you are pushed to your limits and out of your comfort zone but that is what makes it great. Due to this you learn so much throughout and really do produce your best work and get the most out of it.
There is only so much responsibility you can be given because no one has a license to trade or some of the systems. Saying that, I found myself interacting with clients, helping with trades and providing key information. You are set projects which gets you stuck into what the desk does, they give you as much responsibility as they are legally allowed.
I think this internship will help me manage my time and work at university massively. Realising the importance of structuring your day and how to be efficient has been a large part of this internship and something I will definitely take into my degree studies and when I return here for employment.
The Company
On a trading floor it is never going to be completely chilled but, saying that, it was an incredibly good atmosphere and culture among everyone. There was a buzz which was really cool especially when big trades were done or people were doing well. Therefore, even though it is serious there is a large part of excitement.
I thought the general organisation was good and efficient however, there are some small more technical points that could've been improved to have made it seamless. There was the structure there it was just people making sure that is always the structure they actually implement, other than that it was good.
There was 3 weeks of training before the weekly rotations which were really valuable in getting you to a similar level as everyone else. There are also sessions run by desks to help your knowledge and anyone is willing to sit with you to explain a concept, which was really useful.

There is a good conversion rate and enough jobs for everyone if you find the right desk and are good enough. You are essentially in competition with yourself rather than the people around you and your ability to be entrepreneurial. Therefore, if you are the right fit for a desk you've got a high chance.
The Culture
There were events that were put on at the beginning which helped interaction between interns. There were also lots of desk drinks to get to know a range of desks and employees of the firm. Each desk also puts on its own event or combines with others which equally helps that social aspect.
London is expensive and everyone knows that and it does not come at a surprise. However, the salary helps cover this and there is not that much stress on the cost of things. Accommodation is expensive if you want to live more central so it is up to you how much you want to commute.
Since I was in central London it is obviously going to be very good and big and popular. The only disadvantage is the cost of it as it is very expensive in comparison to nightlife at my university. Saying that, it is a lot of fun and lots of new opportunities.
There are days in which employees and interns help with the community which gets you out of the office. Equally, the events organised by desks were always external to the office and in a nice venue. Once you join I think there are sports teams you are able to join.
