The Role
really enjoyed - everyone was extremely friendly, both other interns and employees, felt valued, good balance of training and time to complete own learning. Met a range of people from across teams, had lots of events put on just to help interns network and meet people across the firm very often.
felt very valued: was never treated as an intern or made to get coffee - the opposite infact, would often have people take me out for coffee. Fairly senior people would often have meetings with us which they'd clearly prepared for when they knew our names and backgrounds, which makes us feel valued
every intern is assigned a buddy to support them, someone usually in their first year and more junior so you feel comfortable asking questions. my manager scheduled a weekly check in with me so he always knew what i was doing. I also had a mentor, and the whole team was always more than happy to give informal advice
a good balance - hours were pretty reasonable, maybe slightly more than your average 9-5 but nothing crazy, and while i was here i had enough work to keep me occupied, but not so much that it was unmanageable and i felt stressed. i also felt i could say no if i had too much
i was definitely doing real work with real responsibility during my placement, but all the work i did would be checked (although i often sought for people to check it myself). i also gave several presentations to fairly senior people / large groups of people, so the responsibility was on me there to do it well
my degree is unrelated to finance, so the only help for my degree would be presentation skills and excel skills gained. however i feel the skills I learned will be useful in my wider career - I learned many soft skills such as professionalism, the importance of visibility and communication with your manager.
The Company
general atmosphere was very nice, people are very sociable and any one is willing to go for a coffee catch up with you if you email them and ask for advice. the 'reply all'' culture means that everyone is involved with everything, and in general the atmosphere wasn't too stressed either
in general pretty well organised - my only gripe was that i didn't get to do more rotations and see more teams. in some divisions they did too many rotations and didn't go in depth with any, which i wouldn't like; but maybe 2 rotations would have been ideal, to see a slight variety
the firm really invested - everyone was always more than happy to give up their time to train me even in very basic things. People on my team would often sit with me for more than an hour at a time, slowly explaining things to me, even if i had already asked about it before
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
very appealing - the people are lovely, and the firm has a very good reputation. Almost everyone here says that they have learned so much from working here. In addition, it's well known that the exit opportunities are very good, so even if I chose to leave, I would have set myself up well for other jobs
The Culture
very good - people would often hang out on Fridays after work, which was a great way to informally meet people and network across the division. My team also went for team lunch often, and team drinks to celebrate leavers, joiners and visitors, as well as housewarmings and family events
very expensive, unfortunately the city of london is extremely expensive. On the plus side they pay you well enough to afford it.. And you get extra for accomodation
pretty good nightlife - loads of pubs and bars as well as a fair few nightclubs, although all of them were extremely expensive
a fair few - some social events, and i was informally invited to various other sporting events, barbeques, etc
