The Role
During my internship, I had the opportunity to rotate in different desks throughout the Securities Division. Given the vast amount of desks at Goldman Sachs, there were a lot of appealing roles I tried. I had 6 rotations in the course of 10 weeks, which helped me understand what I liked/disliked doing and which role I could see myself working in the future. I am very grateful to the designers of the program, as I feel that this is the only summer internship that allows such a huge flexibility to the interns to explore desks and meet employees from different desks as well as across divisions.
I believe that the employees were dedicating a lot of time to us interns. They were inviting us to their desks, explaining what they did and were more than happy to get more technical in case we expressed an interest. It required a lot of effort from their part as they had to deal with the market hours as well, but that did not stop them from showing us what was happening every minute and how they would handle any problems/complications they had.
At the beginning of the internship, we were assigned MD Champions and buddies. They were the people the interns got closest to during the summer. The MDs were always available to speak to us and help us with any advice/suggestions when we were struggling on how to handle the workload or even when we had to make decisions regarding the desks we were going to spend our next rotation. Most of the people at Goldman Sachs joined through the internship program and made a career in the firm. Hence, employees and especially our MD Champions were extremely helpful and understanding given that they had once been in our shoes. During the weekly rotations, the teams would give us a project at the beginning of the week and were urging us to ask questions throughout the length of the project in order to deliver a good work in a timely manner. Especially at the beginning of the summer, the supervisors were very understanding regarding our prior knowledge and flexible whenever they saw us struggling with a project.
Ideally, during the internship there is a project every week based on the rotations we do. 5 days were more than enough to deliver those projects. However, as the internship got towards the end, I tended to take up a lot of projects which made my work more intense given the deadlines. I found myself a bit busy at one point, but the desks were more than willing to extend their deadlines as long as you would tell them beforehand that the timing was not realistic.
My internship was in the Securities division and given the regulations in place, interns were not allowed to speak to clients nor trade. However, the employees were very encouraging, they would urge us to come up with trade ideas and let us know if they thought they were good enough to implement. Otherwise, they would explain to us the problems which improved our judgement.
I believe I have learned a lot during this summer. The opportunity to go across the whole Securities division and learn how the bank functions and how the different desks collaborate with each other is priceless. I got a general understanding in the beginning and then got into more details as the internship progressed. I am extremely grateful to HCM and the employees which made the experience so valuable.
The Company
The general atmosphere was great! The people were very friendly and funny, which created a warm culture where you would be happy to work in every day. The employees seemed very supportive of one another and encouraging in bad times. Each team had something that distinguished them from the others, but they all had in common a positive atmosphere and a welcoming spirit.
The Securities summer internship at Goldman Sachs is a 10 week internship which is set up to be as flexible as possible so all the interns get a whole view of how the bank functions. The first three weeks, we had a lot of presentations regarding different products and as well as hourly rotations where we would be divided in groups of two people and would spend an hour with the desks we were assigned to. They would explain to us what they did and if we found it interesting we would maintain contact with them, which would be very beneficial if in the course of the internship we would want to spend a week in their desk. The other 7 weeks, we were allowed to have weekly rotations in the desks that we had found interesting and we would work on weekly projects with them. HCM was constantly providing us with feedback from the desks, so we would have a better idea of where we were a better fit. The program is designed in such a seamless way that makes you gain a lot of knowledge and expands your network tremendously.
The employees were extremely helpful and always willing to explain any questions us interns would have. In the beginning of the internship we had training regarding the use of different applications we had access to, which helped a lot in the weeks to come. Additionally, different desks would organize presentations where they would explain what they did and then get into the more technical parts of the job which helped us understand in more detail the dynamics of the everyday work.

I personally enjoyed the summer internship a lot. The everyday work sounds very appealing and it is exactly what I see myself doing in the future. Additionally, the people are extremely nice and friendly which makes it an environment I would want to be in on a daily basis. The whole aim of the internship is that everyone that has made it to here has all the chances to get a job. The desks wanted us all to do well and they helped a lot in improving our skills which was very beneficial to getting higher probabilities of getting an offer.
The Culture
The fellow interns were very friendly and interesting people. I created a group of friends I would hang out with after work and who helped me throughout the course of the internship. Although there was a sense of competition, the interns were all vert helpful in case someone was struggling and I believe overall there was a good culture which made the experience easier.
I lived in a 西瓜视频 residence 20 min away by public transportation which was relatively cheap. During lunch, I got food in the cafeteria/restaurants which were affordable. After work, we would go for drinks with the interns to casual bars close by where we would socialize with the rest of the team/interns.
I was new to London and I did not know much about the nightlife. The other interns who had studied/lived in London were more than happy to share with us the famous bars/clubs which were not very far from the office. Overall, we would mostly go out during the weekend as I personally needed to be rested during the week.
Yes! During the internship, I did not find myself working every single weekend which left a lot of free time to socialize with other interns and get to know them better. Spending time with them made the experience better and easier. Additionally, we had groups of interns volunteering together through the CTW progam where I got to meet interns from different divisions.
