The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my ten week summer internship with Goldman Sachs. The program was executed with great precision with a fantastic balance of organised intern class events while being allowed plenty of 'on desk' time to complete projects and learn more about the team I was placed in.
The team I was placed within made me feel like part of the family from day one. They all took at least half an hour from their busy schedules to catch-up with me within the first week and get to find out more about me as a person which I really appreciated. Throughout my time I was constantly checked up on, allowed the opportunity to shadow them and actively encouraged to ask questions.
My manager was fantastic, prompting me to arrange weekly catch-up sessions with her to update her on my progress and provide me with continuing feedback to allow to me to develop throughout the process. She explained my projects in detail and whenever I presented her with questions she was keen to ensure that I made the most of every task I carried out.
As expected the first couple of weeks were relatively slow work wise due to system access limitations, however this was when I was busiest with intern events organised by HCM. After that I was given my daily tasks and projects to do and was kept constantly busy with some tasks taking longer than others. The working hours I had also allowed me to have a good work life balance - something I was worried about.
I was given the responsibility of over half the tasks carried out by an analyst, meaning that I was producing reports etc that were required by my team but also teams globally. There was obviously limitations to what I could do but it's perfectly understandable given the length of the placement.
I believe the inter-personal skills I have developed from this placement will help me greatly when I return to uni and life beyond. Studying a STEM subject I was concerned that my lack of subject knowledge would delay my progress and that I would learn things that were irrelevant to my studies, however I have realized that it's not actually the day to day tasks that will help me necessarily in the future (although they were extremely interesting and would help if I were to return) but mainly all the other skills.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was great, with all levels of management making an effort to know my name and about what I was doing. I worked in a private area so I was concerned it would be secluded and quiet however there were weekly quizzes and always a general buzz in the office which made coming to work more enjoyable.
The work placement was very well organised with the perfect balance of GS talks, leadership over sights, talks from sub-divisions with my division, project work and catch-ups with people around the office.
My colleagues were constantly involving me in training and progression right up to the end of my internship - making sure that I was encouraged to ask questions all the time. They would give me further responsibility also to accompany this which was so encouraging.

Future employment prospects are exceptionally appealing. The company culture is very appealing to me and I would love to come back to my team or potentially explore other areas of the company given the opportunity.
The Culture
I stay further afield in the UK and so had to move to London for the placement. The biggest issue I found was that the majority of my intern class were commuting from an hour + away because they were staying at home - perfectly understandable given the rent prices in London. This limited social activities slightly. However the company did arrange a variety of events at the start and towards the end which were well attended. My team also had a large range of social events which were great to get involved in.
The cost of living and socializing was extremely expensive, to the extent that I brought in lunch from home almost every day as I couldn't justify spending 拢8 a day on lunch. The canteen within the company was the worse for prices. While the food was good and varied, paying 拢7.50 for a salad seems a bit ridiculous.
I worked in the City of London so the nightlife after work mid week was great, with pubs always full and offering deals. However at the weekend the place was very very quiet - understandable though as very few people live in the City of London.
The company organised for all interns to take place in an community team works day where we volunteered at a chosen charity for the day. The offered a fantastic experience to get out of the office for the day and give back to the local community.
