The Role
The work placement was structured with a variety of events. My manager, buddy and HR always made sure that everything was going well throughout the internship. The work itself was varied and fulfilling, consisting of learning new concepts, applying them to real world problems, collaborating with people to find the right answers, and reviewing and presenting my work.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. I was introduced to everyone in the team and included in all team meetings from day 1. My team has been very patient with me by virtue of recognizing the fact that I'm an intern. They made time to catch up with me and explain various aspects of the work they do and how it fits in.
I was given immense support and guidance by my mentor. They have not only been instrumental in helping me successfully get through this internship, but also has given me meaningful career advice and has introduced me to his network of employees within the firm. He was particularly super helpful helping me get started.
The work was very flexible, allowing me to be as busy as possible. That said, there was an hour long HR event almost every week. and you'd have various team and project related meetings as well. I organized catch ups with other employees which kept me busy apart from the work itself. The project was nothing extremely difficult and was reasonably difficult for the time period.
I was given extensive responsibility as I was working on a project that had been a long time coming for my clients. I was working with a New York intern for a bit which meant that she needed me to do my bit at times so there was that added dependency.
The skills developed involved cutting edge technologies that are non-proprietary. These technologies and concepts can and will be applied to my final year project in university and in various personal projects that I'm a part of. The various interpersonal skills including networking, presenting my work, and communicating with both local and global teams are definitely going to be useful no matter what.
The Company
The general atmosphere is relaxed, with a casual dress code and fun quirks like a ping pong table and a foosball table. The office is mainly open plan which means that everyone including senior staff is approachable. There are various meeting rooms and collaborations that could be used to discuss projects or if you really needed to focus. Ample whiteboards are also scattered around.
The overall internship was organized very well. We were addressed by senior members of the firm including the CEO. We had a field trip, and a community service day too. We had many networking events introducing us to different parts of the firm. We also had hackathons which enabled us to compete against interns globally in a relaxed atmosphere.
The company made available various resources including MOOCs and e-book portals. The new graduate committees held training sessions for interns as they had been through similar training recently. We had also all been allocated greenfield projects working with cutting edge technologies, which we could seek guidance on from subject matter experts available in the firm.

The Culture
The social scene in the firm was fantastic. My team held a trip to the V&A museum in the first week I was there. The recent graduate committee organized a picnic in a nearby park. The firm also hosted a technology wide barbecue which was very well attended. My team was also very social and organized weekly team lunches.
The cost of living and socializing was steep as the offices are in the heart of the city of London, which is arguably one of the priciest districts in London, if not globally. Having said that, if you handled your finances sensibly, it was easily possible to have a good time and still save a bit.
