The Role
Intensive learning, people that are always willing to help you with questions. Person that is full-time employed to make sure that the work-life balance of everyone is maintained as good as possible in this profession. Next to work, many events are organised to make sure you get to know the different professions in the division and get to know enough people.
As much as possible, my colleagues gave me work that mattered, and jobs that could teach me something important instead of giving me only grunt work. We went out for team lunches and team events to get to know each other, like a baseball event in Regent's park. The team would proactively make sure that you feel at ease, are not swamped without daring to say so as an intern and have the optimal learning experience.
Help was always there when needed. People actively made sure that interns where not on their own in difficult situations and did not stay when they didn't need to. They give you a lot of responsibility, and it is your job to ask for help or guidance. However, when asked upon it is always there.
In summer, it is not always easy for any team to provide enough work to keep the interns busy all day. You need to ask for it but sometimes there is just nothing for you to do. However, Goldman Sachs makes sure that there are other activities like an intern challenge to make sure everyone stays busy.
I had the opportunity to work very profoundly on one of the live deals, and after a couple of weeks I was fully immersed in the project and my analyst let me email with the client directly as he trusted my judgement. That was a very interesting experience.
Having done 2 internships already, I have never been offered so many learning platforms and guidance to understand new concepts. I believe that the skills that I developed will show to be extremely useful in the rest of my career.
The Company
A lot of events, people very nice to work and have an afterwork conversation with. Very good atmosphere between the interns as well. People are happy to be here.
Very transparent in whatever was going to happen, team was up to date about who was coming, assigned places etc. We where staffed on a project already the first day, staffing was very hands on. Preferences for teams are generally respected.
We had trainings and informative sessions about everyday on all the aspects of IB. All the people where incredibly helpful and took the time to sit together with me and explain more technical concepts of the job.
Subsidised/Company Gym
I believe my internship went fairly well and I have a strong shot at recieving an offer of one of the teams I have interned with.
The Culture
I meet up with my fellow interns about every weekend, and enjoy their company enormously. These are the people I want to work with. The same counts for my full time colleagues with whom I had the most interesting conversations, fun experiences and I would definitely see myself work with these people.
London is generally expensive and Goldman Sachs is located in the heart of the city. Therefore the cost is relatively high.
As Goldman Sachs is in the heart of the city there are plenty of options for all tastes.
I believe this is the only thing where the working experience can be improved.
