The Role
I massively enjoyed the work on my internship. The learning curve was quite steep but I expected that going into the internship. The growth in my knowledge has been exponential and I'm sure it will go on to assist me with my future studies at university and beyond. It was fantastic!
I felt very valued by my colleagues as they would often give me important tasks that were projects clients (or the wider firm) really needed doing. In that way when I was completing such tasks I knew that whatever I was creating was going to have a real tangible impact and this made me feel valued.
I was majorly given support and guidance by management/my supervisors as Goldman have a buddy + mentor system in place. So upon starting I instantly had two people I could reach out to and ask as many questions as I needed to (ranging from the littlest things to more complex ones)
The workload was quite intense if you could not prioritise time and tasks efficiently and effectively. I realised not long after starting that managing expectations was crucial as at the start I would take on too much work and find myself in a rush to process it all. I since changed my strategy to under promise and over deliver and I was much more successful at managing my time.
Lots of responsibility. As referenced earlier I worked on live client projects that had a real impact on the business and I felt that responsibility right away. It was quite inspiring to me to know that the work I was doing was having a real impact on the firm and the business.
They will assist me massively. Having come from an economics background I was familiar with those concepts and theories, but much of my work revolved around more finance related work and as such I didn't have the high proficiency/technical skills initially. But as I want to study finance modules at university I will now be able to lean on the skills I have developed over summer to be much more successful in my studies!
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was fantastic, people were vibrant and easy to reach out to and talk to. Despite the fact everyone was busy with their own tasks and work, everyone was open to sitting down with you and having a coffee and sharing their experiences with you.
The internship was extremely organised and HCM worked very hard to ensure it was seamless for us interns to settle into the firm. Sessions were organised weekly, almost daily, for interns to attend and learn about the business. HCM really did a great job in structuring the internship, they made it an even better experience!
The firm invested massively in me, whether that's through the access they gave me to their systems to learn, or the specialised programmes they bought for me to work on, they did invest a lot. Also the countless training sessions they put on really helped me to learn and develop.
Massively appealing
