The Role
It was a great experience and of great value. It has helped me to decide whether Management Consulting is something for me. The application process was very complicated, but the outcome was really worth it. During my time, I joined two projects. That was the best decision to see how projects within Consulting can vary.
From the first day, my colleagues in the office where so friendly, scheduled catch-ups with us and helped out whenever we needed help. Within my projects, my team always highlighted how much they value my support or work. This was a great feeling, as it shows that you can make an impact even as an intern.
During the first week, you get assigned a People Manager and a Buddy. The People Manager is the person that will evaluate whether you get an offer in the end. The buddy is there to support you about everything outside the project (and also for questions you might not ask your line manager).
As long as you have an own task, you are busy. However, when you are just helping out and supporting your colleagues, you might be in the situation to be a bit bored. Nevertheless, people are always happy to give you a task when you ask them. For this reason, it is actually a good balance.
As the internship is just for eight weeks, you do not really get a lot of responsibility. This probably also depends on the project. For example, my first project gave me more responsibility than my second one. Of course, people have to understand that when a project is short and complicated, it is obvious not to be given too much responsibility.
It definitely improved my self-confidence, as I speaked in front of many people. It also improves your technical skills in terms of microsoft office and google drive applications, because you use them every day. It also improves your time management skills and prioritisation skills, because you will be given several tasks at a time.
The Company
When you are in the office on a friday, you will have a great time. Most of the consultants are there and it is a very relaxing atmosphere. You usually go to lunch together and then join socials in the afternoon/evening. Everybody helps you when you need help for any tasks.
Everything is well planned ahead. Arriving in Windsor for the induction days helped to settle and get most of the information needed. When I arrived in my office, they gave us another presentation and key information for the next eight weeks. Even when we were missing some information, there was always somebody to help us.
At the beginning you are being sent to Windsor for 4 days. This is the induction and network opportunity before you start your project. You are staying in a great hotel and have seminars during the day and dinner with networking in the evening. It is impressive how much PwC value its interns.
After my performance on the internship, and the great feedback I have received, I have got an offer for next year. Nevertheless, I will defer my offer as I am going to do a master degree. PwC will definitely be a consideration for my future career and I would be proud to return in a few years.
The Culture
In my department we did not have many interns. nevertheless, the atmosphere was really nice and we enjoyed going on socials together and help each other when needed.
I cannot really comment on this as my office was in the same city as my university is. Therefore, I live in my usual flat and had no unusual expenses.
The Leeds nightlife is great and each Friday, most of the people in the office are going out for drinks. There are even several pubs right in front of our office, making 4pm drinks very appealing.
There were opportunities such as cricket or clubbing. If you are interested in a certain area, you should get in touch with somebody who organises events in this area, and then join socials. Drinks are usual and happen each Friday afternoon or evening. Therefore, it also depend on your time and commitment.
