The Role
I enjoyed my work immensely, particularly the ability to make a meaningful contribution to real projects. I also enjoyed working with the people at PwC: invariably, they were nice, helpful, and supportive. Overall, working at PwC helped me learn quite a bit about what it is like to work as a strategy consultant.
I felt valued by my colleagues to a large degree, particularly while attempting to solve a problem or fix an issue where I was unaware of the solution. I also appreciated being able to socialise with colleagues out of hours at intern socials and dinners, helping me get a better sense of PwC culture.
PwC has an extensive network of support for interns, including a buddy system to ensure that we have someone to direct silly questions to, and a people manager to ensure we are staffed on projects and serve as an overall guide throughout the internship. Each individual team member I worked with was also very helpful.
As one might expect given the nature of the work in consulting, this varied greatly, and there were often times that I simply didn't have much to do, as well as relatively late evenings in order to complete a task in time for the people I was working with to use.
Unfortunately, due to the short length of the internship, it was impossible to pick up enough skills and subject-specific knowledge to do the same high-leve work as my team-mates. However, I was given substantial responsbility to complete important pieces of work that were within my skillset, such as proofreading and research.
Working in a business environment helped me develop my communication skills, and the ability to work tightly with a team to get a project done by a specified deadline. I also had experience using a variety of specific software packages that I expect to be useful in any future work.
The Company
It could be a bit quiet at time, but overall there was quite an effort made to make interns feel welcome and at home in the office, including support for socials. The people working at PwC are also fun to talk to and work with, making the overall atmosphere fun.
There were a few glitches at the beginning of the internship (for example, IT issues and problems getting documents processed for the reference check). Overall, though, the internship went smoothly, though it was difficult to get time on a large project simply because of the amount of work coming into PwC at the time.
The firm sponsored a very helpful residential training session before the start of the internship, and continued to support us in learning new skills and developing existing ones. There was also a very helpful emphasis on getting constructive feedback so as to immediately correct any skill gaps or issues in working style.
PwC has a uniquely supportive culture that focuses on giving out offers to interns who meet the expected standards and prove they can do the work. Combined with the interesting work and the supportive staff environment (training, teammates, socials, etc), PwC is a very appealing place to work regarding future employment prospects
The Culture
Everyone I worked with was fascinating and social, and the intern socials sponsored by the company (as well as any ones that were organised on an impromptu basis by the interns ourselves) did a great job of lettings us get to know each other better (the training was also a very social experience).
The cost of living is as high as someone might expect for a central London office. In particular, the cost of transportation to the center (or rent in Zone 1) is very high, as well as the food around the office (it's a good idea to bring your own lunch)
Again, the PwC office I worked in is in central London, although this means that the prices are very high (as mentioned above), this does come with advantages, such as the nightlife. Fortunately, PwC books nightlife opportunities for its interns to partake in (for socials), partly mitigating the high cost.
There appear to be many opportunities for full-time employees to get involved, with sports teams, pro-bono volunteering, and more, but it was unclear how to access these opportunities as an intern. Furthermore, the short duration of the internship (by nature of being only in the summer) made it harder to get involved in such activities.
