The Role
I enjoyed it immensely. The team was amazing and friendly. They provided a residential which was a good introduction to the company and the other interns in your office. This also showed they were investing in us and our development. It was clear the interns were valued and their contribution appreciated.
Initially it was hard to feel valued as the work that was given tended to be basic due to lack of technical knowledge. However through interacting with those in my team, I believe I showed a keen interest in tax and therefore they began to explain things to me and give more interesting work.
Everyone is given a buddy and a people manager. My buddy was in and out due to exams so a senior associate would act as my buddy in his absence. They were both approachable and wouldn't laugh at silly questions. My people manager also gave me work often and got me involved in calls where possible.
I was usually quite busy and there were days where I had to say no to things. However due to the internship being in summer, people weren't always around therefore there were 2 days where I had no work. But it was easy to get work but emailing around and asking if there was anything I could help with.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility and as everything was reviewed before it was sent on, I was able to see where I went wrong etc. Due to my lack of technical knowledge, the team would talk me through the task to explain it so I was able to do more.
My writing skills developed from more factual to more personal but I would still stick to example formats to ensure I was still clear. There were different websites which helped develop my wider tax knowledge as well as reading VAT notices and legislation. There were also training sessions during the residential however only a few were applicable for my line of service.
The Company
Due to it being summer it was quite quiet. As there is a flexible working policy, people would often work from home and therefore few people would be at our table. There were socials organised but I didn't attend any. People were friendly and helped if you got lost in the office.
From my perspective, I believe it was quite well organised however I know some interns were given little work and would be bored. Therefore, it can vary depending on the team and who's in your team. The residential was relatively well organised but I felt like they could have made the sessions a bit more targeted around our line of service rather than it being general.
The residential was the main investment. They put us up in a fancy hotel and were given training sessions and posh dinners. However as I've said previously, for tax the training sessions were generic and most of it wasn't relevant so it was boring. They also gave us free drinks tokens which helped socialising.
They give the majority of interns an offer for after graduation, and it seems like it would be a nice place to work. There are options to transfer to a different line of service or locations if you wish but you have to reject the offer to do so, which many see as a risk .
The Culture
There was a Whatsapp group and hangouts chat where people would organise lunches and drinks after work. People were very friendly although some are very condescending and talk as if they're always in a job interview. My team did a welcome lunch in my second week and other teams had drinks/nights out.
It wasn't too bad as people were able to get cheap 西瓜视频 accommodation for a few weeks. Drinks are obviously a bit expensive on broad street but those are optional. Transport is expensive and slow. A 西瓜视频 bus pass for 4 weeks cost 拢40.
