The Role
The internship was a very rewarding experience and I greatly enjoyed my time at PwC. I particularly enjoyed being involved in a variety of projects in different sectors e.g. life, non-life and banking, as well as working simultaneously on them. I enjoyed working in small teams and with people of different grades and learning about the work that they typically do.
During my internship, I felt very valued by my colleagues and my peers especially when working on projects together. Everyone was incredibly friendly and very approachable and always had time to explain difficult concepts to you. When working on projects, my peers were also very receptive of my suggestions and possible improvements.
There are many support materials and training documents made available to you during the 3-day induction in Windsor. Once you come into the office, there are also more technical supports materials for you to learn from. Feedback received from the project managers you work with is generally good, however, some feedback can be rather vague.
I was quite busy during my internship but there was a good balance between catching up with more senior members of the team and finding out what work they are involved in, and completing training documents, and working on my own projects. Overall, I was busy but there was a wide variety of things to get involved with.
I was given more responsibility than I had originally anticipated, for example I was responsible for my own section of spreadsheets on a project. It was my responsibility to ensure that the data inputted was correct and the spreadsheets were consistent with the rest of the Excel workbook. I was also given freedom to create a presentation in my own way, whilst still including key information.
The Excel and VBA training that I received during my internship have been particularly helpful for my own development. Being exposed to these functions and code have broadened my understanding and I now feel much more confident using these programs. I have also developed my time management skills from working on many projects simultaneously and this is a significant skill that will help me when I start my career.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was very friendly and everyone was very approachable. Everyone made me feel included and part of the team and like my contribution had a significant impact. I was invited to many social events, such as after-work drinks, and celebratory drinks events and there are monthly team social events to get involved in.
The organisation was very organised during my time there. I was regularly updated with what was occuring in the business, both on a broad and department-specific level and I always knew who to contact for any queries I had. Everyone I talked to was well aware of the internship process and were always willing to help.
I attended 3 banking training sessions on new legislations and possible implications over the 6 weeks. There were many people attending, of many different grades, and it was a good setting to gain a basic understanding of the international financial standards. Everyone was very welcoming and happy to discuss their experiences of the actuarial profession and asked about my own future career path.

Having completed my internship, I was not successful in getting a graduate job offer. However, there are future employment opportunities in the firm for future interns.
The Culture
In my line of service there were four interns in London in my intake, with 2 outside of London. There was a good social scene as we regularly met up and had lunch together and we also went to many evening events together. There was also a good social scene amongst all colleagues and who encouraged us to attend several social events.
As I was in the London office, the cost of living is more expensive than other regions. But it is a very social place to live and work in. I lived at home during the internship and commuted into work everyday, so I cannot comment on the cost of living.
In London, the nightlife is great. Although I didn't go to any clubs with my colleagues, we did go to many bars that were near to the office.
There were many opportunities to get involved outside of work. For example, there are weekly sports teams and events such as five-a-side football matches with colleagues and badminton matches as well. I was also involved in a 3-day induction with over 200 other interns, who were working in different lines of services and in many different offices.
