The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. Everyone in the team was very friendly and helpful. I was given a lot of work over the six weeks and worked on a lot of different clients. I loved the Reading office. Great location, great layout and a really good vibe around the place.
I felt very highly valued by my colleagues. I was given a lot of work and received a lot of gratitude for doing it. It was made clear that my contributions were helpful to the team. The feedback I received from everyone was really nice and showed that they appreciated my efforts.
I have been surprised at how helpful everyone was. For example, a lot of the work I have been doing was provided by someone who was often working from another office but when I had any questions I could send him a message knowing that he would reply instantly and help me out.
The internship started off fairly slowly. For the first week or two there was not a huge amount to do and so it could be quite boring at times. However, it really picked up after that and there was never a time in the last few weeks when there was nothing to do. That said, I never felt time-pressured or like I had too much to do so the balance was spot on.
I think I could have been given a bit more responsibility. I was given a lot of work and felt like I was able to contribute to the team but, for the most part, the work was excel based rather than interacting with clients or working on big projects etc.
Over the six weeks I have learnt a lot about tax in general and more specifically the implications from a UK tax perspective of leaving/entering the UK on assignment. This is unlikely to be useful in the final year of my degree but will certainly be useful in the future, especially as I will be working at PwC after I graduate!
The Company
There was a really nice vibe in the office. Everyone is really friendly and gets on well with each other - it is easy to approach anyone to ask for help or more work etc. I'm a big fan of the 'Dress for your Day' policy. It is nice to wear something more comfortable and to not have to wear a suit and tie everyday.
I think it could have been organised slightly better. When I first started the internship there wasn't really too much to be getting on with and so the days could drag a little. It would have been nice to have been given some sort of interesting project to work on from the outset to avoid this.
I think the firm put a lot of effort into training and development. For example, I was given the chance to sit in on calls with senior members of staff and after we would have a chat about the call. I would ask some questions and they also ask me some to test my understanding.
It is a great place to work. I have been offered a graduate role which I am delighted at. I am very much looking forward to working here in the future. From what I have gathered, there are a lot of opportunities for career progression and ample chances to work on different projects with different clients etc.
The Culture
Really social.
Not too expensive at all.
Not the best nightlife in the world but not bad at all.
Not really.
