The Role
I have really enjoyed my internship, and I have found it more interesting than I expected. Although my internship was in Corporate Tax, there was a lot of flexibility as I could work with various people in different departments. I feel like I learnt a lot in a short space of time, and enjoyed what I was learning.
It is hard to be valuable when you do not have qualifications and knowledge of the area you are working in, such as when I was just work shadowing and learning this was valuable for me but not so much everyone else. However, as the internship progressed, I feel as though I was given more work to do, which made me feel valued.
Everyone has been really kind and helpful, whenever I didn't understand something someone would always be willing to take a bit of time to explain things to me. Although, I wish there was a bit more guidance in terms of being given work, as sometimes finding work was a struggle.
Only on a couple of occasions I couldn't find any work to do. But even when I have free time, there were things I could be doing such as reading and learning things which will help me for future work. Generally I was busy and always had something to do, although it was my responsibility to find work.
I wasn't given a great deal of responsibility, which is as I expected. Most of the work I did was drafting something (emails, letters, reports) for someone else, therefore I never has responsibility of client work directly. However, I was given responsibility when calling up HMRC, which was something I had to do on a regular basis.
I don't think this internship will help directly with my degree studies, however it will be useful if I decide to take accounting qualifications later on. The skills I have developed will definitely help me beyond my studies, as I have attended meetings, socials, made phone calls and have been able to conduct myself professionally in a work environment.
The Company
Everyone was really friendly, and the atmosphere is comfortable. I was worried it would be silent, but it was not like that at all. Everyone seemed to get along well and it was easy to approach people when you need help. I also liked how the office was open planned, which made it easier to talk to people.
The induction course at the start of the internship was really well organised, and included socials which was great to make you feel comfortable and get to know other interns before you entered the office. It would have been better if there was more structure for the summer internship programme, as occasionally it was hard to find work.
The first 3 day were intense training about tax, and I could tell the company had invested a lot into the initial days. Overall it was clear that a lot of time and money had been invested in me to work at pwc, but I would have liked more opportunities to learn about tax in more depth.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
I do not know yet if I have secured a graduate job, but the aim for the internship is to get the graduate job at the end. This will be 3 years on the graduate scheme where you train to get qualified while also working, which would be an amazing opportunity which the internship plays a big part in getting.
The Culture
In the 6 weeks, the inductions had good socials over lunch and dinner where you can get to know all the other interns all over the country. Once I got to the office, there were a couple of team socials and team lunches which were a great way to get to know people in a more relaxed environment.
I found the cost of living very reasonable as I had to rent somewhere for the period of the internship since I lived too far away. There were plenty of places to socialise and go for lunch, although the places near the office were quite pricey to eat at, but fine occasionally.
I didn't really do anything at night, except for go to watch a football game after work with some colleagues which was fun. From what I've heard the are a lot of places to go in the evening and at night, and the nightlife is alright since Southampton has a lot of 西瓜视频s.
As this was just a six week internship, I didn't get involved with anything outside of work but I've heard there are yoga classes, football and netball teams. One of the socials I went to was clay pigeon shooting and quadbiking which was a lot of fun, but I didn't take part in any regular activities.
