The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. Overall, the 6 weeks gave me good insight into what Assurance at PwC would be like - I spent time both in the office and on client sites. PwC also has a great work culture - everyone is really friendly and happy to help! It was really easy to settle into the office.
I felt that work I conducted on client sites was really valued by my colleagues - I was assigned my own tasks, which involved regular interactions with the clients. For small teams, your work really contributes! When in the office, the work was still valued, but I felt less depended upon.
At the beginning of the internship I was assigned a people manager and a "buddy" - both of these were really helpful! My buddy had been at PwC for a year so was able to answer any general questions I had. My people manager was more senior and was more responsible for ensuring I had a good overall internship experience.
Some days were busier than others! Time spent on client sites was really busy, so I had a few days where I did overtime (nothing crazy though). When at the office things were generally less busy as deadlines weren't so tight - this allowed me to catch up on admin so there was always something to do!
When at the office I wasn't given too much responsibility; work generally involved checking / preparing documents, which were later reviewed by senior members of the time. When on client sites quite a lot - it was my responsibility to gather data from the clients (though I was given help whenever I needed it).
If you want to work in Assurance at PwC the internship is a great way to familiarise yourself with PwC applications. Otherwise, the main development areas were in soft skills, such as developing client relationship. If you don't want to do Assurance you probably won't learn an awful lot, though.
The Company
Really friendly. I was based at the Reading office. Everyone works hard, but the atmosphere isn't intense. There are also lots of meeting rooms if you need to take a call, so the office was also fairly quiet. There's also a "break out" area where you can go to relax (and play table tennis!).
Overall the internship was well organised. However, I would have liked to have spent more time away on client sites (as this work was the most fun!). The induction week was also good fun and was useful for meeting fellow interns both at the Reading office and the rest of the UK.
The application process has several stages, so before you even get to the internship they've invested in you! Everyone was also always happy to give you time to chat / coach you through your tasks. There were a number of presentations we were able to attend aimed at learning about all of the PwC service lines.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
PwC is a great place to work. There's a clear promotion pathway at PwC, so if you work hard you will progress within the business really quickly. Everyone at PwC is really knowledgeable about their service line as well, so you learn really quickly. PwC also has a fantastic reputation!
The Culture
The social scene was surprisingly good! A large proportion of people at PwC are fairly young, so there's always socials being organised. During the internship the World Cup was on, so regular events were created both in and out of the office to watch the games. There was also an afternoon at Ascot too!
The cost of living wasn't too bad, though Reading is close to London, so I imagine it's on the expensive side of places to work. I personally commuted though and as long as you're not commuting form London, I think the trains are fairly cheap! For me it was a 拢10 return.
I didn't experience too much of the nightlife, but I believe Reading has a pretty good one (you can always head into London!). We did go to bars on several occasions and there's a fair few to choose from. If you wanted to go out, there were certainly places to go.
There were a few opportunities outside of work. Socials were regularly organised, but there were also lots of sporting events that people got involved in. Cricket was played regularly and is open to anyone in the office (of any skill). There was also 5 a side football, which was quite popular.
