The Role
Overall, a great experience where I learnt a lot about the firm's culture and its people, and had exposure to a range of roles and projects within my business area. The firm is very friendly and welcoming, and there was a good level of structure involved, from the 3 day residential induction to the regular meetings with your manager to ensure you're getting the most out of your internship. I think the work was a bit too slow, and not enough formal training/technical stuff.
I felt very valued by my colleagues, everyone is so friendly and makes a real effort to include you and talk to you. I felt that the workplace was very open, so I could ask almost anything without worrying about seeming clueless, whilst also still feeling respected and like my work had real value. One slight disappointment was the lack of socials within my team - I didn't get to experience much of this.
My supervisors were really supportive, they were always willing to have a chat but never felt overbearing. There were guidelines on the number of chats you should have together but this was quite flexible, nothing felt forced or like a 'box-ticking' exercise. Very genuine and caring, they made sure you were busy or doing OK. Did not always know the procedures in terms of the steps after your internship to secure a full time role (which was not their fault), so the firm should try and improve this in future.
This was my main issue - work was extremely sporadic and although I appreciate it's summer (there is less work), I felt like I really was not making the most of my internship. Given we're only here for 5 full weeks (Week 1 was induction/introductory activities), there should perhaps be a better way of getting work to interns or at least some record of how busy they are. I would've liked a lot more to do, perhaps this could have involved a week of formal training to get to grips with Excel, or an interns' project where you can work on it in your spare time (but not like the general challenge, something compulsory).
I would say in the tasks that I was set I was given some responsibility, but this involved mostly compiling slides or formatting things. It would have been more beneficial if I could have had more exposure to technical aspects of the work, e.g. if I was not qualified to do it myself a walkthrough given by one of your colleagues/an explanation.
It has helped me be more independent and take charge of my experiences, and I have gained a good understanding of my business area, both through the training during the induction and on the job. There was experience of Excel gained, mostly around formatting rather than formulas, but this is still useful. You definitely learn how to manage your time and networking skills.
The Company
Very friendly, everyone knows one another (very different from London) and people are willing to help each other. The atmosphere is fairly driven but also relaxed, people stay on task but still want to enjoy themselves. The flat hierarchy is tangible, no one seems inferior and even most partners are very approachable.
The induction was very structured and we stayed busy, but beyond this I feel things could have been more efficient. Whilst the atmosphere is quite relaxed and that's enjoyable, there could have been more to do or more structure to ensure you were always doing something. The communication between staff was not always great, so you could feel you were slightly forgotten or constantly pestering people for work.
They do seem to invest a lot, the induction is very comprehensive, people are willing to show you how to things, the PwC Professional is emphasised and this can be useful in setting out goals for yourself. The regular interaction between you and your manager means you're made to understand how you've developed, which is helpful. There is also a good level of trust, you are made responsible from early on. The only thing is technical training - there is not a lot of this and it could make the rest of the work easier.

The firm is very much growing, and they are actively trying to build a diverse firm, so prospects seem very strong generally. They are also actively considering future trends, and divisions are adapting to reflect this, so they seem to be in a good position as work continues to change over time.
The Culture
Interns were very sociable, e.g. all having lunch together was common, but it's more about what you make of it. Not many events put on by the office for all interns, so mostly depends on what you organise yourselves. This can be a bit disappointing at times. The induction was very social, with dinner and drinks every evening.
The area isn't too expensive, but prices do seem to be increasing. Cost of living does not seem to be too high, a lot of the junior staff in the office live nearby. The station is a short walk from the office, so transport by train is very easy. Parking is not easy to get, so those who drive in usually use park and ride.
Nightlife is good, there are quite a few restaurants in the local area, and lots of pubs and bars. There is a good level of variety for a chilled night out, but not much in the way of clubbing. Transport links are good, so getting to London is not that hard if you want more to do.
Not that much - there were a few socials but not many. There are a few sports teams, and some business development work, as well as an office newsletter. Could be more to get involved with, as the activities don't cover that wide a range of interests. Some wider initiatives in the office
