The Role
My summer internship at PwC has provided me with excellent insight into the day to day operations of the company. I really enjoyed how welcoming all my colleagues were when I first joined, and how they have helped me fit in over my 6 weeks here. They treat you as equals rather than an 'annoying' summer intern that I can imagine most places are like.
From the first day I felt as though I'd been working for PwC for years. Everyone was so easy to talk to and I didn't feel nervous approaching anybody for a chat. All the work I submitted was always appreciated and feedback was always clear and concise. My colleagues is what made my internship great and that is why i hope to return to PwC.
My colleagues were always willing to give support and guidance whenever I needed it. Obviously you don't want to feel like you are pestering them but most of them have been in your position before and are more than happy to help. Another great thing about PwC that I feel singles them out.
I worked in the Tax department throughout my internship which i thoroughly enjoyed. I was made aware that this was the 'quiet' season for tax,as the busier periods come at year ends, but there was still plenty to do. Obviously there were some days where no work was presented to me, but I would always send out an email at the beginning of the day and most of the time I'd get an email back with some tasks.
I was always told 'act as if you have got the job' and that is the level of responsibility I was given to. For example, I was asked to draft letters to clients and join in on client calls. At no point was I treated as if i were only an intern.
I feel that the biggest skill I have learned throughout my internship is how to work with a team of people of different ages, backgrounds etc. In my opinion this is the most valuable skill you can take with you. The programme also boosts your confidence a lot - showing you that the corporate world is not as scary as it seems.
The Company
The office was generally a fun and exciting place to be in. Obviously this is the summer period where a lot of people are away on holiday so some days are quieter than others but nevertheless it was still very enjoyable! It is fun to an extent, and at the end of the day it is an office where everyone has to go and work.
I thought the internship was set up adequately well. The induction days in Windsor were excellent and the whole internship process was really enjoyable. However, I feel that the programme is very centred around assurance and during my office induction I felt that my Tax role was sort of forgotten about.
I was having meetings with my people manager on a weekly basis to catch up on how my internship was going and my development. I felt as though this was a really valuable part of the programme as it showed me which areas i need to improve on and it also gave me confidence in the areas i was doing well in.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
There is no where else I'd rather work than PwC. Due to my line of service conditions I have to wait until the second intake is completed until I find out whether or not I got the job or not. However, I would always recommend to just forget about the offer and just enjoy every day as it comes.
The Culture
I bonded with my other interns extremely well. Most days we would go out to lunch together, and on the days I was not with them I would go out with my tax team colleagues. Overall I am happy with the amount of people I have networked with and I get on with them very well.
I lived at home throughout my internship but this involved me getting a bus in every morning which wasn't too bad. The social side of the job was great - everyone was up for a good time and I always looked forward to the social events that came up .
I didn't experience too much nightlife during my internship as I lived quite far away from the office but all of the internal socials we had were excellent. We went to the races one day, had a few leaving drinks and some office parties too which was really enjoyable .
I was not really aware of the opportunities outside of work. However, as this was just a 6 week internship there wasn't really the time to get involved in many activities. I'm sure that once starting full time that there would be endless opportunities of outside activities. One thing I'd recommend is potentially some intern activities that could encourage the interns around the country to network outside of work.
