The Role
The internship was well structured, providing a great deal of variety over the 6 weeks. The residential during the first week provided a great opportunity to network with other interns across different lines of service. The remainder of my 5 weeks was split between work in external audit and risk assurance. During this time I got to work with a number of high profile, challenging clients. I particularly enjoyed working in the team environment PwC is renowned for.
Where possible, my colleagues provided me with work of value to the clients. During the internship I was given some opportunity to take control of smaller parts of the audit. Where I was asked to complete the more tedious, admin sort of tasks my colleagues were always very grateful. That I was valued by my colleagues was confirmed by the excellent feedback I received from them at the end of my internship.
On each client I worked on, the team made sure to allocate a more senior member to guide me through my allocated tasks. The team emphasised that I should ask questions whenever I needed and always had time to help, which was very reassuring. This meant I was never left unsure on what I needed to do and felt comfortable in speaking up.
This was very varied depending on the client. On certain engagements, there were a number of lower level tasks which could be performed by junior members of the team. On others, where the team had been working with the client for a significant time period, there were fewer tasks directly relevant for the client for me to complete. However, my in charge always ensured I had something to get on with - for example recommending particularly relevant e-learns which helped me to obtain a better understanding of the work we were carrying out.
I feel I was given sufficient responsibility during the internship. I was trusted to independently carry out work for clients and was able to interact with clients independently. I was given the responsibility to manage my own time to complete my assigned tasks. On one engagement in particular, I was given control over a part of the audit file to manage myself.
My degree is in Economics meaning the skills I developed in Assurance aren't directly relevant to my degree. However the greater insight I gained into accountancy will provide me with a good foundation to complete my accountancy professional qualifications in the future. I also gained a good understanding of the audit software used by PwC which would be useful if I was offered a graduate role with the firm. The chace to develop key skills was also important as I was able to improve teamwork and communication skills for example.
The Company
My internship was in one of the new PwC offices. This meant the office was very open and had multiple creative areas where it was possible to meet with colleagues. Without allocated desks, the office environment was very flexible. It was clear that the office had been designed to encourage communication across colleagues of all levels. Regular socials were also arranged.
The internship had a very clear structure over the 6 weeks. The induction during the first week was crucial to allow us to meet and network with new colleagues. We were also introduced to key concepts in accounting which would be applied over the 6 weeks. I also enjoyed the variety of the internship as I was able to complete work in both external audit and risk assurance.
There was effort made during the residential week to offer training on the fundamentals of accounting - however the tutors went through some of the training very quickly and only the basics were covered. Members of the team on engagements also made themselves available to offer help and advice when needed.
I am waiting to have my exit interview with recruitment so I can't talk of personal experience. However, a number of other interns I have spoken to have been offered jobs with the firm and I have heard that the firm regularly makes graduate job offers to impressive summer interns.
The Culture
As I mentioned above, the design of the office was meant to ensure interaction between colleagues. There were also a number of socials arranged. There was also a good social atmosphere between the group of interns as we went for lunch together when in the office and were available to help each other in the office.
I commuted from home to work so can't comment on the cost of living. However Leeds is a 西瓜视频 friendly city and prices are generally reasonable.
Leeds city centre is renowned for its nightlife. The city offers something for everyone with a number of restaurants, bars, cinemas etc which are reasonably priced. I particularly enjoy the sporting venues available in Leeds - for example the Headingley cricket ground which hosts T20 cricket games in the summer.
As I have mentioned, there were a number of socials arranged during the internship during which we were able to interact with the wider team. However I wasn't able to take part in any voluntary activities during my internship. This was mainly because of the short time period of the internship and would be something I would look into more should I be offered a graduate role.
