The Role
I really enjoyed my internship in Assurance at the PwC Reading office. During my time there this summer I was given the opportunity to work on a variety of different clients both based in Reading and across the south east. The office was very welcoming and friendly and I would definitely recommend the internship.
The culture within PwC favours coaching and development, so questions are always welcome. I always felt that those in my team coaching me on new tasks genuinely cared about your understanding and wanted you to develop. People within the office were not just interested in getting the job done as quickly as possible but in everyone learning while still meeting deadlines, of course.
From your first day you have a network of people to support you. Initially you have a buddy who usually contacts you before the internship even begins to answer any questions you have about your first day at the office. You also have a people manager who helps with your objectives throughout the internship to ensure that you are getting what you want out of your time there. Within each audit team there will be an in-charge who assigns work and associates who will coach you through work when necessary.
I was kept very busy through out the six weeks. Everyday you are scheduled to a particular audit. Within that audit team the in-charge will assign you work and have regular catch ups with the team to establish where everyone is at and re-assign work is necessary. Equally you can always be proactive in seeking out work when you have completed the work you have been assigned.
I was given a significant amount of responsibility given that I was allowed access to sensitive and confidential client information throughout my time in the office. You are also entrusted to track your own hours and work flexibly. During my internship I was actively involved in audits the entire time and at no point was just given busy work.
Due to the fact that I study accounting and finance working within an accountancy firm did directly feed into my studies. The majority of what I study entails compiling accounts while working in assurance gave me the chance to audit accounts instead. This experience has given me a deeper knowledge and understanding of accounting which will aid me in my final year of study.
The Company
The general atmosphere is very welcoming and friendly. Everyone is willing to chat with each other and help each other. Due to flexible working hours the office in general is very sociable and will have lunches together and regularly meet up after work. Everyone within the office is definitely working hard to get their work done.
The internship begins with a three day residential trip which is very well organised with activities planned everyday. When you begin your time in your assigned office you will have a local office induction before you start work the following week. Throughout the internship you are contacted by the organisers of the internship to keep you on track and let you know what meeting/objectives you should have met by that stage of the internship.
The firm invests heavily in you throughout the internship. They have a three day residential trip to kick off the internship where you spend three days taking part in team building activities with other interns from out office and learning skills needed for the internship in small classes. Following on from this the firm continues your training online.

The future employment prospects within PwC are appealing. They have a very structured recruitment and progression pathway in the firm which also leaves room for transferring internally between lines of service and offices during your career. They also have schemes where you can spend time in different offices around the world.
The Culture
There is a good social scene in the office, especially as this summer their was the world cup which people arranged to watch together after work or during lunch. There are many different groups within the office which you can get involved with to set up activities and events or just play sports after work.
The cost of living in Reading is reasonably high but not impossibly expensive.
The nightlife within Reading is ok. There are lots of bars and pubs and London is only a short train journey away if you are looking for more.
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work. There are sports and socials most weeks.
