The Role
I enjoyed the internship at PwC, it was run very well and definitely a worthwhile experience. The 6 weeks gave me a good overview of the firm itself, the work the teams I was with do, and the kind of things I would be expected to do as an associate.
I did feel valued by my colleagues, and this was reflected in the kind of tasks they gave me as well as the feedback for each task. With each team I was with, my manager would thank me for the work I did and would also make a real effort to make my experience enjoyable.
The support and guidance provided was very useful. I was encouraged to ask lots of questions and ask for help if I needed it. My supervisors were always patient and happy to explain anything that I didn't understand, about my tasks in particular but also the wider context of the projects.
I was always suitably busy on a daily basis. When I had finished a task, my supervisor was always happy to find me more to do, or resourcing were able to put me in contact with other teams who would need an intern to help out. Furthermore, PwC designed a dragon's den type project for interns to get involved in during any free moments.
I was given a good amount of responsibility during my placement, particularly on client projects. Tasks I was given included editing and updating documents that would be seen by clients or used by my superiors during a project. I felt the work I was doing was therefore important and should be done to a high quality.
I think the skills gained during this internship will help me in my final year of university, as well as my future graduate jobs. I became more comfortable with programmes such as Excel and Word and also gained interpersonal skills such as communication and time management. I was also able to develop my network.
The Company
The atmosphere of all the teams I worked in was very welcoming and supportive. I felt relaxed around my colleagues and was not afraid to ask for help and guidance when needed. My supervisors were also happy to talk about their experiences at PwC too and provide advice about the graduate scheme.
The internship was very well set up; we had an 3 day induction away from the office, where we were given an introduction to our line of service. Throughout the internship, I was able to move around different teams and units within my line of service, and both recruitment and resourcing stayed in contact with me throughout.
Flexi Time
National Travel
PwC is appealing as their graduate scheme is very well organised. Furthemore, the environment and focus on their people is very encouraging. I think the benefits provided such as flexi-time make this organisation more appealing than others. Gaining a qualification at the end of the scheme is also a plus.
The Culture
There were only a few other interns in my office within my line of service, but we did make an effort to meet up for lunch or by using online chat. I think other lines of service would have had more of a social scene thanks to having a higher number of interns.
My internship was in London, which is very expensive for both living and socialising. PwC do pay interns in London more to account for this. Commuting also takes a lot of time so socialising opportunities were limited. I think interns in other cities would have had a better living experience.
Nightlife in London is very good but also expensive, and I don't think interns really experience the nightlife here.
