The Role
I have managed to learn so much in such a short space of time (6 weeks) and it has definitely confirmed that I would want to continue here once I have completed my degree. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful and I hope I can be the same to an intern one day in the future.
Everyone knew I was on hand at any point to assist in smaller, but still important, tasks to help them reach their deadlines. So the fact that I rarely had to ask for work throughout my time made me feel valued. Perhaps it would have been nice to get involved in some bigger tasks.
At the start of the internship I was repeatedly told 'no question is a stupid question' and they weren't wrong. I have asked hundreds of questions during my placement, even ones I considered 'stupid', but no one ever hesitated to assist me and answer anything I wanted to know, nor have they said or thought they were stupid.
There were moments where I would finish a piece of work, and everyone around me would be frantically busy, which did leave me with nothing to do. However, I was always given work whenever people found themselves with a spare few moments to sort it out for me and explain it, so that I would have something to do almost all of the time.
I was definitely given a lot more responsibility than expected. A particular example was when I had to send out emails to around 60 individuals. I received a few replies to these, and where I thought I would just forward these on to someone else, I was encouraged to draft the response back, and once this had been checked I would send the reply myself.
I think it is difficult to compare an office environment to a university environment, as the kind of motivation to complete the work is completely different. However, I have definitely learnt a lot more IT skills (particularly in excel) and understanding more about how to correspond appropriately with clients, something which is applicable to any job I may go to in the future.
The Company
For almost the entire time the office felt relaxed and friendly. There were moments where people may have felt under pressure during a busy day, but generally I felt I was able to chat to anyone. The openness of the office, as well as the hot desking idea, means that everyone is friendly with everybody.
The logistics of the placement was very good. However, I did feel that once we had actually begun in the office very little had been planned and arranged. Most of the time we were given work that people had spare at that time, rather than work they had been able to prepare in advance with clear instructions. It would also have been nice to have a few meetings booked in before with began, particularly with clients or partners, as this was something I was keen to do but it was too late once I arrived due to people being out of office.
We spent the whole of the first week in a training induction. This was very valuable, as not only did I get a good introduction to my own line of service, but I also got to find out a bit more about other types of work done here, so I felt that if I found that I did not enjoy my line of service after the placement I would have a clearer idea of what I may want to do instead.
I definitely hope to come back here once I have finished my degree.
The Culture
I spend lunch every day with the other interns, as well as various trips to the pub with them and other colleagues.
We chose cheaper places to go for drinks which was good. However, my commute to work was driving, and the cheapest place to park was 拢4 a day, with a 20 minute bus journey into town. This was far from ideal, as anywhere closer was far more expenses, or restricted parking hours.
I didn't go out later than about 7pm, but there were plenty of places to go should I have wanted to.
The only activities going on during my placement were socials/drinks trips after work.
