    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The programme was incredibly well organised, with a wide range of training, case studies, senior speakers and other activities. It was clear that a lot of effort had been put into the spring programme, so that we came away with a true representation of the banking industry and Goldman Sachs itself.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I was particularly impressed by the number of senior employees who took time out of their days to speak to the spring interns, with a lot of them speaking about hiring talented young bankers as being one of the firm's top priorities. Goldman Sachs are definitely investing in their graduate recruiting, starting with the spring programme. Additionally, analysts and associates were generally happy to grab coffee and chat about their experience within the firm. We also had access to all the firm's resources - online learning platforms, the onsite gym, etc. Having these really made us feel like part of the firm, rather than interns who were there for only two weeks.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Guidance during the week was generally good. HCM provided regular feedback and were available for any further questions. We were also given buddies, who had completed either the spring or summer internship, which meant that we always had someone to talk to and ask any stupid questions to. Some more initial guidance during case studies could have been useful but overall, we received a lot of support.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • We received two days of external vendor training, which helped incredibly with mastering the basic technical skills needed for working in investment banking. We also received guidance on presentation and interview skills, both of which will be useful in the future no matter what career we pursue. Having multiple presentations and being required to debate helped to progress presentation skills throughout the programme.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • A lot of effort had been put into making sure that the spring programme was full of useful sessions. We received talks from many different teams within investment banking, providing a nice overview of different opportunities available at Goldman Sachs. We were given individual schedules so we knew exactly what was going on, and I liked the way that there were suggested activities for any free time, so we never felt like we were sat around doing nothing.

    5/5

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was very collaborative and all the interns were happy to help each other out. HCM made it clear at the start of the programme that we were not competing against each other, which helped foster a friendly atmosphere. We worked as part of many different groups which meant everyone got to know each other and we would regularly walk to the office and get meals together.

    5/5

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Goldman Sachs really wanted every one of the interns to succeed and gave us every chance of doing so. Training during the start of the programme meant that everyone had an equal footing with regards to technical aspects. We were given continuous feedback throughout the programme which helped us to improve.

    5/5

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The programme was great at giving us an insight into the culture at Goldman Sachs, and it was clear that the collaborative nature of the firm is something that its employees value highly. Compliance limitations meant that we were unable to shadow any analysts at their desks, but we were encouraged to speak to different employees who could give us an idea of what they do in their day to day roles.

    5/5

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The programme placed a strong emphasis on the culture within the firm, with many speakers giving examples of times when they had experienced the collaborative culture in practice.

    5/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The programme was incredibly useful at giving us a deep understanding of investment banking, so we can make more informed decision on our future career paths. A lot of emphasis was placed upon the less traditional teams, which helped to highlight that even if M&A is not for us, there are many more options out there.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were a few organised networking sessions, but most of the networking opportunities were self-driven. HCM and our buddies were especially useful in putting us in touch with people within different teams.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • A range of more formal structured sessions and informal chats over coffee with different employees.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • There was a firmwide session on life beyond the desk, and we were encouraged to make full use of the facilities in the office, such as the gym.

    5/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Definitely - it is incredibly useful in gaining a deeper understanding of the investment banking industry, as well as Goldman Sachs itself. The programme destroyed any negative preconceptions I had about the firm before I joined. The programme is much longer than some of the others, which means you get a broader sense of the firm and industry.
