About You
I enjoyed the experience very much. We were all given responsibility and ownership of our calendar for the two weeks enabling us to network as much as we needed to. I would highly recommend applying to this program as Goldman's culture will benefit you in your future career, regardless of where you work in the future.
The firm has a concept of "catch-ups" where any employee is happy to grab a coffee and discuss their role for around 30-45 minutes. Despite the fact that all their employees are incredibly busy, they are still willing to take time out to meet spring interns and discuss their role. This also applies to the more senior members who are always happy to share their experiences and give genuine advice.
We were assigned a buddy who sat at the same desk as us. This enabled us to ask any questions, technical or not, without having to worry. In addition to this, they explained to us the process of networking within the firm which helps the transition from the training classrooms to the desk.
The internship made me a much more efficient person who can prioritize tasks. In addition to this, my confidence in networking and asking questions has significantly increased. This will improve my studies as I'm more confident in using my network as a resource for completing projects. The company are always looking to improve and so are the employees. The key to improving is asking for feedback. This mentality has allowed me to ask for more feedback so that I can improve on my work during my degree.
The Company
The program was very well structured. Every session had a key take away. Not a single minute was wasted. It enabled us to take responsibility for our time while still having scheduled sessions to gain an insight into different desks within GSAM and PWM. There were many speed networking and discussion panels that allowed you to get to know certain people. If you were particularly interested in their division and role, you can ask them to schedule a one-to-one meeting.
There was a very positive vibe throughout the program. Everyone was motivated for their work and were focussed on achieving their daily goal. This was quickly trasnferred to all the interns enabling us to focus on our key targets. There was no hieracal feeling, the MDs all sat with the employees and worked together.
There was a huge emphasis on training. By carrying out basic finance 101 and asset management sessions, this gave us a basis for going to the desks. From the desks, employees took time out to explain certain aspects of their role to further develop our understanding. Everyone was patient and gave us time to develop.
Having my own calendar and desk work was a good indication of what a full-time role would be like. By maintaining many projects and deadlines, I had a good idea of what level of efficiency is required to meet my objectives. This was overall a fantastic insight, similar to how other firms may run a summer internship.
By introducing the business principles on the first day, GS kept illustrating how they applied their culture to their work. Integrity in everything they do is essential. They emphasize the phrase "It's not if we can do, it's whether we should do it". Every action they take involves analysis of "how would future generations view this decision".
The Insight program introduced many different roles within the company which I didn't know about. This enabled me to explore different paths further. Despite this, one key development aspect of the company is the mobility within GS, enabling constant personal development. A key learning lesson is that you need to have a mixture of ambition and patience when pursuing a career path.
Everything Else
Employees were in open networking sessions. What was more valuable was that you could message any employee in the company and try to schedule a time to meet. Most of them will find time to meet one to one for 30-40 minutes and discuss their role which is very insightful. GS did this very well.
There were a few frimwide networking opportunities enabling all the divions to get to know each other. In addition to this for IMD, we had a quiz night in which we had dinner with it as well creating a relaxing atmosphere. These opportunities were excellent for building relationships with our peers.
They explained many of the affinity networks as well as the gym and fitness classes. GS offered many different fitness sessions throughout the two weeks. T-shirts and shorts were provided. Furthermore, we had a panel of employees explaining their hobbies. The employees all had out of work activites which they all kept up on whether that was sports, music or reading.
I would recommend this program to all my friends. This is a fantastic way to gain an insight into banking and Goldman Sachs. If they don't choose to pursue the career further, they will still gain a wide range of skills and improve their confidence when networking. This program will improve the way you work in other places.
