About You
The insight was comprised of 3 days, the first I found very interesting, we tried new technologies and learned about each area within the technology department and we could ask questions. After this I shadowed an employee in tech risk, I enjoyed seeing what day to day work would be like, but personally the work she was doing I would not want to do on a long-term basis.
I felt the shadowing could have been more personal, in the sense that she had not prepared anything specific for me to see, but she was very friendly and explained what work she was doing. Other than the shadowing, PwC had invested a lot of time in the programme which I felt valued for.
It was not really an insight which required guidance or support in the sense that it was more a chance for me to make the most of seeing how the technology department functions. Although, they did advise us on tech department choices, what would suit us and how to interview well.
The information about each area was quite in depth, more than I could get from the webiste which meant I could make a more informed decision on which area to apply to, or not apply to. I think the placement has worked well in ruling out which areas I would not go into, as well as those that have interested me.
The Company
There was a lot packed into the 3 days, with many employees giving up their time to speak to us. The shadowing could have been structured more effectively because it is difficult to shadow if the person has a lot of work or emails to send off for deadlines. Otherwise everyone knew where they were meant to be and at what time.
Everyone was friendly and welcoming towards us, everyone I spoke to tried to explain what they do and simplified it. Ontop of this, we got to play games to understand each job and try out their new VR systems and technology. At the end we had a presentation which was good practise infront of senior members of PwC.
It was not really a case of investing in me personally in the 3 days, as it was more just getting an insight into what they do, however they did help us on interview practise and gave us pointers on how to present more professionally. I did learn in the shadowing.
It was really helpful to see how employees work on a daily basis. Shadowing an employee myself allowed me to see and do some of the work she did, as well as just understand what the atmosphere is like within the office. It has definately given me a better insight than what I had before or imagined.
I feel like all the online reading and company values are seen in the way they work in real life. There is a huge amount of diversity within PwC and the way they work is professional but friendly, with an inclusive atmosphere and almost a flat hierachical structure was really good to see.
Having the talks from a member of each different team was really helpful, already seeing the type of person and their everyday job made me make decisions on whether I could be suited to that. After shadowing for a day and a half I could also rule out jobs that I did not want to do.
Everything Else
I was paid a very good amount for the 3 days, when I applied I was not expecting anything. Although they did not reimburse expenses, this was not necessary as they had paid us enough to more than cover expenses. It was a pleasant surprise for a programme where I was benefitting a huge amount from the information shared.
We had many opportunities to talk to employees from different departments in the firm and they even said we could set up a coffee meeting with anyone we felt they had missed out. When I was shadowing, I spoke to a number of different employees about their work which was interesting.
We networked between us and with the employees, but we only had 3 days for the whole insight and getting information from the work was also really important. We did not have any purely social events like drinks in the evening as we already had really busy days. With the employees I spoke to, there were networking opportunities
Only briefly did I speak to employees that had set up or played for various PwC teams. They said there was a range of opportunities and I could even set up my own team. Also they explained the social events they go on as a team every quarter which was different from the working atmosphere.
Definately- with no previous work experience in a business environment such as PwC, the insight was a good way of getting a taster of something I had relatively little knowledge on. It was varied, and allowed me to make decisions on my future jobs and exclude jobs as well which did not interest me.
