About You
I really enjoyed the Spring Programme. There were so many chances to network with people within the firm and gain a genuine insight into what people across the firm, from first year analysts to partners, actually do. The programme gives you a broad picture of the division you are assigned to and the internship is really well structured and thought through so I never felt like I had nothing to do and everything we did as Spring Interns was interesting and useful for starting to think about what it would be like to work in an investment bank.
I was really surprised how willing people were to help throughout the placement. The programme is split between networking opportunities, desk rotations and presentations and everyone I interacted with was genuinely happy to answer all my questions and give meaningful advice on how to do well during the internship as well as how to build skills and knowledge that are useful for a career in finance.
The recruitment team were a great source of support and the programme is very well structured so you get a lot of guidance in terms of how to navigate the internship. We were given lots of advice from people from all areas of the firm as well as several networking opportunities to meet people from all desks/areas of expertise in the firm. There were also opportunities for thorough individual feedback as well as guidance on how to progress from the Spring Programme to the Summer Internship. Because the programme is also quite large there is also a great support network among peers and the atmosphere with the other interns felt very collaborative.
I learned so much from the programme and it has helped me with several skills, probably most notably networking as that is a heavy focus of the Spring Programme. You also get a real sense of how collaborative the firm is, working in small groups with other interns as well as forming relationships with different teams within your assigned division. I also developed team work skills as well as time management.
The Company
The programme was really well structured. The first week is very structured with mainly presentations from different desks within the division and a couple of desk rotations. In the second week you have a bit more free time built into the schedule so you can research the division a bit more independently and start to gain a better insight into the desks that you found the most interesting in the first week.
The atmosphere was really friendly. It was quite intense because the learning curve was very steep but the support is really good and the other interns I met on the programme were great so there was a really convivial atmosphere. There was a strong emphasis that the programme was as much about interns finding out if Goldman Sachs was for them as it was about Goldman Sachs working out if the interns were a good fit for them.
I felt that the firm really invested in the Spring Interns. There were so many presentations giving us an insight into as many different areas of the division as possible. We met people at every level from first year analyst to partner and everyone I spoke to seemed genuinely interested in helping us, answering our questions and giving us a good insight into what their work involves. We were also given opportunities to demonstrate what we'd learned over the course of the programme. You are also encouraged to network lots and to build a lasting network so it feels like they are investing in you for beyond just the two weeks of the Spring Programme.
I felt like I got a really good idea of what each desk generally does and I also got a sense of what an intern would be doing on that desk. It was quite hard to get a sense of what a full time employee actually does on a day to day basis though.
By the end of the placement I felt I had had a really good insight into the culture of the firm, the emphasis they place on team work and working collaboratively. We had a few presentations given to us on the culture of the firm and their business principles and by the end of the placement I felt I had seen most of these principles in action.
I got a really good insight into what working in finance could be like as well as a good insight into the skills needed to do well in the various different roles available. It hasn't caused me to make a firm decision about my career but I am definitely now considering a career in finance much more seriously.
Everything Else
The whole programme is centred on networking and helping you to meet people across the firm. We had a few structured events to help us to meet people as well as events to network with the other interns. These events felt like a starting point to then be able to start a conversation with someone and then go on to meet more people in that team.
There were a few networking events built into the programme such as a breakfast and a couple of after work drinks events but a lot of the networking was done on a more independent basis. There were a few opportunities to network in smaller groups as well but I felt like there could have been a few more social events built into the programme, especially with the other interns.
We got some insight into what was available outside of work including a presentation on what people did independently outside of work but a lot of the information focused on things available in the office such as the various diversity networks such as the women's network/black network and the on site gym.
Yes - it was really well structured and there was a great support network built in. I think the programme being a bit longer really helps to get a broad insight and also gives you enough time to get a bit more in depth knowledge of the desks that interest you most. I met so many interesting people who I will keep in touch with.
