About You
The insight week introduced me to the field of finance and gave me an overview of what Asset Management is about. It was a great opportunity to experience the culture and atmosphere of Goldman Sachs and I was positively surprised with how helpful and kind everyone was to me. The two weeks offered various experiences from desk work, having catch up with different teams and educational classes about markets and introductory finance. The two weeks at Goldman Sachs exposed me to a various extent of work, people and learning experiences and motivated me even further to pursue a career within finance.
I got put into a team which was very warm and welcoming and they all managed to take time out to have one on one sessions with me which meant a lot for me. The whole Asset Management division also has a very inviting atmosphere and everyone is extremely helpful. People will always smile at you and come up and introduce themselves to interns.
I felt that the guidance was exceptional, it allowed for clear understanding of what was expected and also for flexibility for to manage time to catch up on any learnings or organise meetings with employees to get insight about their work. It was clear who should be asked for what questions and the HR team was very helpful with any matter.
During the insight I developed group working skills and characteristics which helped me to effectively tackle difficult and unfamiliar tasks. It was thrilling to work with a group of motivated people and also the challenge of working with completely new areas meant that I learnt a lot during a very short period. The learning aspect is a huge motivator for me and it was exciting to hear and experience that you will never run out of things to research and learn about when working at Goldman Sachs.
The Company
The schedule was extremely well structured with a variation of lectures, guest speakers, in-class sessions and desk time. It allowed for flexibility and for consistent excitement throughout the weeks. The focus of developing both knowledge and characteristical skills were well balanced and allowed for a holistic learning experience. The social events put in were also appreciated many as it gave room to network with other divisions and interns to get a wider sense of the firm.
The atmosphere was extremely nice, as all the interns were allocated to different teams which meant that we learnt a lot from each other and early on adopted a cooperative mentality. It was very helpful for us to ask each other questions and to make sure that we progressed as a group. Everyone was active during our in-class sessions and we helped motivate each other to steepen our learning curves and take on tasks with confidence. It was valuable being a small group which created a closeness and a good flow of communication. All of Goldman Sachs employees were extremely friendly and did not hesitate to meet up for a catch up and share their career experiences. The panel sessions and networking organised were well focused and had extremely well formulated questioned which guided into interesting topics. HR did a fantastic job with making sure that everything ran smoothly and ensuring that I felt comfortable and that I was progressing. I felt like I could come to them with any concerns and to ask for concrete feedback.
I appreciated the educational finance sessions and how much time was spent on making sure that I understood, allowing for questions and insight to recent affairs. I felt that I challenged myself to develop new networking, cooperation and research skills all due to the help and motivation offered by HR and the employees around me.
I believe that being allocated to a team and having actual desk time helped me fully grasp the feeling of what it would be like to work at the firm and the asset management division. The catch ups with various employees allowed me to get an overview of what the different teams do and how a work day looks.
The company culture is very evident from just walking around in the office, everyone is friendly and says hello to you and are not shy to spark up a conversation asking you how the insight week is going. This made me feel very welcomed and I also felt that I had a value to the firm.
Before the insight week I was unsure about what it would be like working in an office and in asset management. I don't think any amount of research about a firm or division can give you the same exposure as actually experiencing it. I decided to come in with an open mind and was very satisfied when experiencing the culture and intellectually stimulating work at Goldman Sachs. It has motivated me to continue exploring the option of working in finance and most importantly triggered an interest for learning more about the financial world and developing an understanding for complex subjects. The days spent at the firm proved how much there is to learn and how exciting it can be to work in a firm where you are continuously challenged and never end developing knowledge.
Everything Else
I was paid and reimbursed expenses
Yes, we had multiple networking events with different division and teams.
Extremely well organised, there were both more formal networking events and more relaxed ones which gave everyone the opportunity to network in the form that they feel most comfortable in.
We had an information session about activities to get involved in and the firm also offered us various gym sessions during the insight.
Most definitely to anyone who wishes to pursue a finance career and is eager to learn.
