About You
Extremely, people whom I'd just met or sat in meetings with would offer to go for a coffee and talk about what they do. I was also taken to lunch by various people. You also get a temporary laptop which makes it easy to manage your schedule and contact other people ins case you need any help.
There was a 2 hour-long induction on the first day in which the recruiter gave us some background on PwC and what would be expected of us during the partner interview and placement. Apart from my shadowee checking in on me, other people also took the time to explain what was happening (before/during meetings etc.) and gave me documents to read for background, which I found helpful.
The Company
This depends on who you get. My shadowee was excellent and arranged a full schedule of meetings to sit and and work for me to do (supervised by her or other people). However, there''s no set structure and everything depends on who you're shadowing. Another WiB candidate in the same office had her partner go out of state of business and so had to find something else to do. There is another person who is assigned to help in case this happens, though.
Great! I got the impression that people worked hard but there was a lot of banter and general goodwill in the office. People went out of their way to help me and most are willing to go for a coffee. Also very collaborative as I observed colleagues willing o set up meetings to clarify things they didn't understand, ask for help, etc.
Can't say much about this as it was a week-long placement. However, we are paid and have access to stuff like coffee, like regular employees. We are also allowed to claim expenses if we attend meetings offsite (which is rare, but happened in my case). We also get a notebook and experience log which guides us to record what we did in an organised way, making it useful for interviews.
Very useful! I had a few questions as to the type of technology used in firms and was able to see first hand, which is definitely a plus as the answers are nowhere to be found on the internet. I also attended a variety of meetings at various stages of the project lifecycle (e.g. initial proposal, kickoff, client and market surveying, etc), much like a full time member of the firm.
Quite, as I spoke to people in various positions within the company. I was in the main office with everyone else and so got to see how people actually work as opposed to being told by a HR person. Coffee culture and networking are among the more observable aspects, as well as the degree of collaboration.
Not really for me as I was already set on joining a Big 4 firm but perhaps gave an insight into the differences between service lines opportunities for crossing over as well as skills which would be valuable. Those who have zero idea however would probably find it extremely useful.
Everything Else
Living wage and expenses only for offsite travel.
Yes, there were loads as I have mentioned earlier. The office is open plan which means that there are plenty of people whose faces you recognise after a while. My shadowee also facilitated this by sending me to meetings with different parts within the service line. Once the initial contact has been made people are quite willing to have a chat or give you their email address/LinkedIn profile.
