The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. I was given an open ended project which aligned really well with my skills and background. I got to take part in daily activities with the team and came up with solutions using novel mathematical techniques.
I felt really valued by the team and was often asked for my contribution in areas where I had gained experience. By the end of the internship I became heavily involved in solving day to day issues, making me useful to the team.
My manager let me shadow for many hours at a time, and spent a lot of time walking me through some of the difficult technical aspects of the job. I was sat next to my manager throughout the internship so I could ask questions whenever I needed to.
I was very busy throughout the internship, I think the firm does a good job of preparing project ideas beforehand based on your previous skills. This means you can hit the ground running and really add value throughout the internship.
I was given a lot of responsibility by the end of the internship. The expertise I had gained in a specific area was well received by the rest of the team, and I was often asked to make my own business decisions which affected the rest of the team.
The hands on experience I gained in statistical and computational techniques is priceless. The process of taking ownership of ideas and hypothesis tests is something that can't be replicated in a university course, and is something I will always carry with me.
The Company
Goldman Sachs has an open plan office with new (non) uniform procedures for Engineering teams. It was a really relaxed atmosphere and it was very easy to talk to senior members of the team to ask for their help.
The internship was organised seamlessly. From the day I joined the desk all the permissions/software had already been requested for me and I was able to get started on my project right away. The seating was also well prepared and I had set members of the team who I could ask for help where necessary.
A lot of people spent time with me to explain complex ideas throughout the internship. This was set up by management periodically and there was a lot of emphasis on speaking to different members of the team to learn about different business areas.

Subsidised/Company Gym
Very appealing. Goldman Sachs seems to be investing heavily in their recruitment process and it seems like a great time to join the firm.
The Culture
There were a couple drinks sessions organised for interns, but I think more events could have been set up from HR to improve the social scene.
There's very good links from the office to other parts of London, so it turns out not being an incredibly costly experience. You're also reimbursed well so it's never an issue.
It's London!
The interns are all involved in a community event to volunteer and help others. It's organised really well and is an enjoyable experience.
